Tamankhola Rural Municipality has built a herbal park on Soledanda, 2,600 meters above sea level. The model park has been created by planting more than a dozen species of protected herbs, said Joklal Budha, chairman of the rural municipality.
Herbal plants have been planted on about 7 ropanis of land near the forest spread in Lamela and Sole of Tamankhola 4 as a model. The rural municipality has invested and built the park as a model of the entire forest.
Dozens of herbs used as medicine, including Satuwa, Ashwagandha, Chiraito, and Banamakai, have been planted here. Budha said that 700,000 rupees were spent on the construction of this park in the last fiscal year and the current year. ‘We have planted herbal plants in a place that is protected by fencing,’ said Budha, ‘after growing them in this park, they will also be used commercially.’ He also said that if the production of herbs can be increased, a processing center will be set up at the local level.’
Local Chhaprasad Sirpali said that all kinds of herbs can be found in this forest. ‘After the construction of this park, direct entry into the forest has also been banned,’ said Sirpali. ‘Even in the park, we open it only when necessary to dig and take care of the herbs.’ Budha said that the local level will do the work of finding a market for medicines and cosmetics from herbs.’
The municipality, which has prepared a detailed master plan for Sole Danda, has made plans to attract tourists, protect martyrs’ parks, forest banquet sites, and grazing areas, and encourage animal husbandry.
The rural municipality has a plan to develop the place where the herbs are planted as a research area. Ward 3 Chairman Jhak Bahadur Budha said that based on the herbs discovered through research and identification, the results of the research in the Sole forest can be found, made into blocks, collected and marketed. He said that although this work has not been completed immediately, the campaign has begun.
A road has been built from Burtiwang to Sole via Bongadobhan, Taman, and Lamela. This road is also listed as a state strategic road. A trekking route has also been drawn connecting Sole, which connects Rum and Okharbot in Malika Rural Municipality of Myagdi. A trekking route has been drawn from Tarakhola in Baglung to Nodalle Hill in Tamankhola 6. Dhorpatan can also be reached through this route.
Soledanda is also famous for tourism. Since it is located on the border of Malika Rural Municipality of Myagdi and Tamankhola Rural Municipality of Baglung, domestic tourists from both districts visit this hill. Famous for the song ‘Herdaherda Kanchhile Soledanda Katyo Mayalai...’ by folk singer Khadga Garbuja, dozens of types of Gurras are also found on this hill. It is a favorite of many as it has large pastures, cattle grazing areas, and the Himalayan range to the north. People also go there to find coolness in the summer season.
In 2066 BS, the residents of Tamankhola raised donations and built a road from Okharbot to connect Sole and Tamangaun. Since then, this hill has become known as a tourist attraction. The rural municipality has also built a forest picnic site, a water pond, a martyr's park, and a temple here by spending more than 5 million. After such infrastructure was built, some tourists have started coming here to stay for a day. Those who live in huts or tents.
The then Tourism Office, now the Integrated Office of Baglung, has built a guest house here, and a guest house has also been built on the Myagdi side. Locals said that since an attractive hiking trail has been built, people have started coming here to take photos, make videos, and make blogs. Every year, in the first and second week of Jestha, a fair is held in Lamela, near Sole, with sports such as men's and women's volleyball, taro shooting, and chelo. The fair is also famous for marketing local products including potatoes.
