Leela Gurung and Dharmasingh Gurung, who had been living separately for three years, returned to the same house on Tuesday. The rural municipality's judicial committee reunited the family that was about to break up due to disagreements.

Leela, 37, was living with her two daughters in her maternal home in Marsyangdi Rural Municipality-3, Dhagain. Her husband, 43-year-old Dharmasingh Gurung, worked in a general construction business at his home in Frejon, Marsyangdi Rural Municipality-1, Ghanpokhara. As the relationship deteriorated, the two had been separated for three years.

On April 30, Leela filed a complaint with the rural municipality's judicial committee. The allegation was that her husband was not taking responsibility for her and her daughters. After the complaint, the judicial committee held discussions with both parties separately and together. Finally, they were able to reconcile through dialogue.

According to Bishnu Raj Ghimire, the judicial facilitator of the rural municipality, an attempt has been made to resolve the dispute that could have reached the court at the local level. ‘After the disagreement escalated, the wife and daughter stayed with their relatives,’ he said. ‘We had discussions with both parties at various stages.’ Finally, an agreement was reached to live together again, accepting old shortcomings.’ According to him, both have returned home with the agreement to live together.

Leela and Dharmasinka have two daughters, aged 8 and 4. According to the family, Dharmasinka went for foreign employment after the birth of his first child. After returning from abroad, the second child was born. Since then, the rift in the relationship had been growing.

But over time, the future of the daughters brought the two closer together again. ‘We came to the conclusion that we should get together for the future of the daughters,’ said a family member, ‘Both are happy.’

On the day of the reunion, relatives from both sides also reached the rural municipality office. Relatives said that the atmosphere became emotional when they sat in the same place and talked after a long time, and both daughters were hugged by each other.

According to rural municipality chairman Arjun Gurung, the judicial committees formed at the local level have recently started playing an effective role in resolving family and social disputes. 'Out of 19 cases registered in the rural municipality so far in the current fiscal year, 15 have been finalised,' he said.
