The road has been blocked for three days after a dry landslide occurred at Kalobhir near Dobhan on the Benighat-Arughat-Larke road section. The dry landslide has caused problems for the entire Chumanubri rural municipality and the upper part of Dharche. Laxman Gurung, chairman of Dharche rural municipality, said that the dry landslide with rocks reached the base of the road and reached Budhigandaki.
‘We had cleared the road on Sunday to make it easier for vehicles to move around, but the next day a large landslide with rocks fell at the same place,’ he said, ‘It is a road that was opened by blasting, when the landslide above fell with rocks, the road has reached Budhigandaki. There is about 1 meter of road base left, and even machines cannot enter from there.’ He said that there is a situation where the road track has to be opened by blasting again at Kalobhir.
Chumanubri Rural Municipality had also requested the Nepali Army to open the blocked Larke road. On Wednesday, the rural municipality requested the Nepali Army's Benighat-Arughat-Larkebhanjyang road construction task force to open the road blocked by rockfall. Chumanubri Rural Municipality has stated that due to the road blockage, construction materials for the project to be completed in the current fiscal year have not been transported.
The Nepali Army has opened the track of the Benighat-Arughat-Larke road. After the road was blocked by a dry landslide, the technicians of the Nepali Army's road construction task force have already conducted an on-site study, said Rudradhwaj Battalion Chief Birodh Rijal. The road report has been sent to the Nepali Army's Development and Construction Directorate. The Nepali Army has stated that coordination is being done with the directorate for road repair.
The rockfall along with the dry landslide has damaged about 40 to 50 meters of the road. Technicians have said that it may take up to a month to repair the road. The Nepal Army has said that pedestrians have also been banned from traveling on the road due to the ongoing rockfall. Tourists and locals reaching the Manaslu region have started traveling on the footpath beyond the black cliff.
Similarly, on Wednesday, Dharche Rural Municipality had urged the District Administration Office to take necessary steps to remove the landslide. The administration has been urged to facilitate the removal of the landslide as it is not possible to remove the landslide as soon as possible through the single efforts of the rural municipality.
With the opening of the Larke road track to Pangsing, vehicles including jeeps, trucks, tractors, motorcycles have been operating during the winter. Since it is also the tourist season, tourists going to the Manaslu region are also facing problems due to the road blockage. Similarly, locals said that there is a problem in transporting consumables. Locals have been demanding that the road be reopened as soon as possible.
