A national-level bar tending competition, 'Pokhara Flair Master Championship', is to be organized in Pokhara on Chaitra 17. The program is to be held at the Taj Mahal Event Center, Parsyang, organized by Kantipur Hotel Training Center.

The center, which has been providing skill-based training in the hotel management sector for the past two decades, is organizing this competition with the aim of highlighting the artistry and technical skills of Nepali bar tenders, it was informed at a press conference held on Wednesday. 37 professional bar tenders from cities including Kathmandu, Butwal, Chitwan, Itahari and Pokhara will compete in the competition.

Chairman of the organization Bijay Poudel said that this program will prove to be a milestone in understanding the importance of skilled manpower in the tourism industry. ‘We aim to connect the unemployed with employment and employment with income,’ he said, ‘This competition will encourage Nepali youth to pursue an international career in the field of bar tending.’ He also mentioned that 28,000 people have been trained by this organization so far and they are contributing to the country’s economic development. The

competition will feature two categories: mixology (the science of making drinks) and flaring (the art of showing off by turning bottles). According to department head Nischal Devkota, bar tending is not just about serving drinks, it is a unique art and science. ‘Currently, there is a trend in hotels around the world to extend the stay of tourists by showing ‘soumanship’ along with the delicious taste of cocktails and mocktails,’ he said, ‘Human resources with such skills can earn between Rs. 100,000 and Rs. 400,000 per month in five-star hotels in the country and abroad.’ Through this championship, we want to honor their high level of expertise.'

The first placer in the competition will receive 40,000 rupees, the second placer 25,000, the third placer 15,000 and the fourth placer 7,000 rupees. The best cocktail maker and the best bottle flaring artist will each receive 5,000 rupees. The jury of the competition includes Yubaraj Pun, who has 25 years of experience in bar tending, Aila expert Suraj Maharjan, Bishnu Saru of Step Up Hospitality and Shailendra Shahi of CTEVT Pokhara.
