Police have arrested a person after they started investigating after fake Rs 1,000 notes were found in Baglung market a week ago.
Advocate Yam Bahadur Charmakar, who lives in the district headquarters and hails from Kathekhola Rural Municipality-2 in Baglung, was arrested on suspicion of using Rs 1,000 notes of the same number. The police also found fake notes from him. On Sunday, the Baglung District Court extended the remand of Charmakar for 7 days and said that the police are investigating further.
A week ago, fake Rs 1,000 notes were found in three banks in Baglung at the same time. Bank officials said that Charmakar's transactions were discovered during the investigation into how the notes came to be. ‘Initially, he was found to have purchased medicine using fake notes at a medical shop,’ said a member of the police investigation team. ‘16 fake notes were found when the investigation was intensified.’ Including the ones found in the market, 18 fake notes were found in Baglung. All the notes used by Charmakar have the same number.
Charmakar had not been in Baglung for two years. He was arrested and detained by the Bhairahawa police on charges of forging government documents. He had come to Baglung only two months ago after being released from jail. Charmakar, who has been practicing law for nearly a decade and a half, has previously been accused of embezzling Dalit scholarship funds and charging exorbitant fees by putting financial pressure on the parties to the case.
He has not been acquitted in the government document forgery case either. Police say he was arrested after fake notes were found in the market and found with him as strong evidence.
Police say he was active in circulating notes with the number Jha 79169033. 'The investigation is still ongoing, he was arrested after suspicious activity was observed,' said Superintendent of Police Tilak Bharti. 'The investigation may reveal more evidence and other people may also be arrested.'
It is yet to be determined where he or someone in his contact printed the fake notes, Bharti said. According to a bank employee, the quality of the paper was found to be poor, the national flower, and the security symbol sticker were different. Only after this information reached the police through a bank employee did the police conduct a search operation for a few days. Although he was taken into custody on Thursday, the police only informed about this on Sunday.
