A turbine connected to the 50-megawatt Upper Marsyangdi 'A' Hydropower Project in Marsyangdi Rural Municipality of Lamjung has been shut down for high-level maintenance.

The project has stated that the complete maintenance of Unit 1 of the two 25/25 megawatt Francis turbines in the power house has been started. 25 megawatts of hydropower are being generated from Unit 2. Currently, 28 to 30 megawatts are being generated, while Unit 2 is generating 25 megawatts of electricity.

The project has started the maintenance with the permission of the Nepal Electricity Authority when the water flow in Marsyangdi is decreasing. However, the project calls it regular maintenance. While the turbines have been being repaired every 3/3 years, a project source said that Unit 2 underwent high-level maintenance last year. Now, if there are no problems next year, both turbines will not be repaired, a project source said.

According to Dayaram Dahal, the project's interpreter, the maintenance has started from Saturday. He said that this work will last for one and a half months. ‘Chinese engineers and technicians have been deployed to repair the turbines of the project. The repair work has been started under the consultation and supervision of their own high-level engineers,’ he said.

The repair work of the project is being carried out by Bureau-Seven of the Chinese company Sino Hydro, which built the project. Bureau-Seven is currently constructing the Manang Marsyangdi Hydropower Project in Manang.

‘The engineers and technicians of Bureau-Seven, which is constructing the Manang Marsyangdi, are repairing the Upper Marsyangdi ‘A’ project,’ said a project source. A Nepali support team has also been deployed for the repair.

The Upper Marsyangdi ‘A’ hydropower project is the first hydropower project built in Nepal with Chinese investment. The project generates about 33.5 gigawatt hours of electricity annually. In a semi-reservoir project, landslides, rocks, soil and sand particles that mix with the river during the rainy season affect the turbines.

The Upper Marsyangdi 'A' hydropower project, built at an investment of around Rs 16 billion, has 90 percent investment from Chinese multinational company Sino Hydro and 10 percent from Nepal's Chitwan Coal Group (Sagarmatha Hydropower Company).

Construction began in January 2013 and took 4 years to complete, and the project began commercial electricity production in January 2017.
