Bihadi Rural Municipality has begun preparations to systematically produce and brand alcohol produced from millet.

The rural municipality has published a notice urging people interested in producing millet alcohol to get in touch.

According to rural municipality chairperson Parbin Gurung, modern technology related to millet alcohol production will be provided from transfer to skill development training. 'The municipality will provide technical support in branding, packaging and marketing of alcohol,' he said, 'We will facilitate the registration certificate and license process for those who want to start a business.'

Chairman Gurung said that the rural municipality has taken forward the millet alcohol production and branding process under the 'Local Alcohol (from Grains and Fruits) Production, Branding and Sales-Distribution Management Act, 2082' and the 'Liquor Control and Management Procedure, 2082'.

According to him, not only millet but also other local raw materials available within the rural municipality will be utilized. "With the aim of making the village self-reliant, we have moved forward to make home-made liquor a strong source of local income by giving legal recognition to it," he said. In a notice published by the rural municipality, interested citizens who have completed 18 years of age within the rural municipality have been requested to apply by Falgun 20.

This initiative has also received a legal basis at the provincial level. The 'Home-made Liquor Production Regulation and Management Act, 2082' has been passed and implemented in Gandaki Province. The act aims to regulate, register, quality control and bring home-made liquor, which has been traditionally produced, under the tax system.
