The work on the Baglung section of the Mid-Hill Highway has not been completed anywhere. In some places, the road that was built has collapsed and is dilapidated. In some places, the road has become ugly due to potholes.

Unnatural blacktopped patches are visible on the road from Ghodabandhe to Galkot Municipality in Kathekhola Rural Municipality-5 of Baglung. The road is as it is in the place where the landslide occurred. The Highways Project Office has not yet taken any action to remove the landslides.

The road has been abandoned in the Bihun section for years. It is not certain when the road will be built. The contractor side, which has been working since 2072, has a tendency to leave it abandoned after doing some work in the winter every year. Locals complain that even some of the roads that have been built are washed away in the rains and returned to their original condition. The road towards Galkot was blacktopped 6 years ago, and despite repeated repairs, it has not become sustainable.

The road has collapsed at two roundabouts around the intersection and Jhakristhan, posing a risk to vehicles. The road in Bhalumare, which is on the border of Galkot Municipality-9 and 11, has also collapsed and has not been repaired for two years. The road section from Hatiya to Kharwang is full of potholes.

Tej Bahadur Thapa, the chairman of Galkot Municipality-9, said that small vehicles are often bothered by potholes. ‘The road within our municipality is dilapidated, the municipality’s budget cannot be maintained, the highway has left it dilapidated for years,’ he said. ‘Since the public hearing, service recipients who come to the ward have repeatedly asked about the condition of this road, but we have not been able to tell them anything.’ He said that the municipality’s investment has been met with discontent and the highway has not shown any interest.

Recently, not only residents of West Baglung but also passengers from Rukum, Rolpa, Jajarkot, Dolpa and Dailekh have been crossing this road section. The road is collapsing and becoming dilapidated after hundreds of vehicles started plying daily. The state investment has been increased after the road that was open up to Burtiwang was listed as a mid-hill highway.

However, due to the negligence of contractors, some work has not been completed, while in some places the highway has already been handed over to the road department. But the road has not been built according to the road standards. In addition, the journey has become difficult since there has been no work to fill the potholes here.

Although most of the road sections from Burtiwang to Nisi via Rukum on the highway are easy, the number of houses being built on the road has increased in Nisikhola Rural Municipality. Due to this, the road has become narrow. Road accidents also occur daily. Kubir BK, Chairman of Nisikhola Rural Municipality-2, said that if the road standards are not maintained immediately, the road will become extremely narrow.

The road from the district headquarters to Bihun section is being delayed due to the negligence of the contractor. After the locals took the initiative to block the road and get the work done, some progress has been made. But the locals say that they are still not confident that the work on this road will be completed on time. As much as the locals are angry because this section is not being completed, the locals are also angry about the Galkot section, which has been dilapidated despite being built several times. They have also drawn the attention of the state several times.

The delay in the work of the project, which started in 2068 BS, has caused inconvenience to the passengers. The locals are also facing problems in making the road standard. The local Amar Secondary School, Bhimsen Secondary School, Kholatir Basic School, Himalaya Basic School, Laliguras Boarding School and even the health posts of Kathekhola 5 and 6 are also suffering from the road problems.

The Mid-Hill Highway is 142 km away within Baglung. Of that, 25 km are unpaved, and nearly 40 km are dilapidated and have potholes even after being paved. Engineer Rishi Gautam of the Mid-Hill Highway Project Office said that work has been done to fill potholes in the road, and a contractor has been brought in to do the work.
