Targeting the House of Representatives elections to be held on Falgun 21, the District Administration Office, Lamjung, has again issued a seven-day request for the mandatory surrender of licensed weapons.

In order to conduct the election in a clean, fair, dignified and peaceful environment, the District Command Post meeting on Magh 20 had issued a notice for the first time to surrender weapons to the Police Office by Magh 20.

The District Command Post meeting held on Wednesday decided to issue another seven-day deadline to surrender weapons, said Assistant Chief District Officer Thamman Singh Gautam, stating that all weapons had not been collected within the specified period.

As per the decision, the District Administration Office issued a notice on Wednesday itself, asking the people to surrender the weapons they had within 7 days.

According to the District Administration Office, more than 450 weapons have been renewed in the last three years. However, the District Police Office has stated that only 78 weapons were collected in the 15 days after the notice.

According to Police Inspector Gyanendra Bahadur Chhetri, during the first information period, 17 weapons were collected at the District Police Office, 13 at the Area Police Office Bhorletar, 8 at Bhoteodar, 5 at Sundarbazar, 9 at Police Post Kunchha, 5 at Chiti, 2/2 at Bahundanda, Duradanda, Gaunda, Temporary Police Post Dhamilikuwa and Gaunsahar, 10 at Temporary Police Post Jagat and 1 at Maling.

According to the District Administration Office, 1,527 people have obtained permits to possess weapons at various times in Lamjung. Of these, 871 are firearms and 234 are breech-loading. In the last fiscal year alone, the police collected 112 illegal (expired) weapons.

According to Assistant Chief District Officer Gautam, there is a provision that weapons must be renewed every 5/5 years. Weapons that are not renewed on time are considered illegal. ‘We have urged them to surrender weapons targeting the elections, but the expected collection could not be achieved,’ he said. ‘There is also a suspicion that some weapons may exist only on paper or may have been looted during the past conflict.’ We have extended the deadline for surrendering weapons by another week keeping the elections in mind.’

District Police Office Chief DSP Jitendra Kumar Basnet urged them to surrender weapons within the stipulated time before the elections. ‘It is mandatory to surrender the licensed weapons they have.’ If found not surrendering, legal action will be taken,’ he said.
