Orange production in Gorkha has increased by 15 percent this year compared to last year.

This year, 3,000 metric tons of oranges have been produced, said Pooja Regmi, Information Officer of the National Agricultural Modernization Program, Program Implementation Unit, Gorkha. According to the office, oranges worth 210 million rupees have been sold from Gorkha this year. ‘Oranges have grown well this year,’ she said, ‘Farmers have also received a fair price for oranges. Even though they are sold at an average rate of 70 rupees per kilogram, oranges worth 210 million rupees have been sold from the district.’ Regmi said that farmers sold oranges for 70 to 150 rupees per kilogram. ‘A cooperative in Gandaki Rural Municipality has reported that oranges worth around 20 million rupees have been sold,’ she said. ‘Looking at the situation across the district, a single farmer in the Gorkha Municipality area has sold oranges worth up to 3 million rupees.’ Last year, 2,500 metric tons of oranges were produced in Gorkha. The unit office has reported that oranges have grown well even on old trees and new trees have also started producing, with production and income increasing. ‘Orange sales have almost reached the final stage,’ Regmi said. ‘After picking the oranges, farmers have now started pruning and strengthening their gardens.’ Similarly, Regmi said that about 187 metric tons of lemons have also been produced this year. She said that lemons worth Rs 15 million have been sold from across the district.

Ek Bahadur Thapa of Gandaki Rural Municipality-2 said that new plants have also started producing as old gardens have been destroyed. ‘Income has also increased as new plants have started producing,’ he said.

The National Agricultural Modernization Program Implementation Unit Gorkha has been supporting orange cultivation in the district. Commercial orange cultivation has been taking place in Gandaki, Shahid Lakhan, Bhimsen Thapa, Gorkha Municipality and Palungtar 9 and 10.

Orange cultivation is being carried out in an area of ​​1,097 hectares in the district, and more than 300 farmers are involved in orange cultivation. Oranges produced in the district are being sold to cities including Kathmandu and Pokhara.
