In Lamjung, where coordination is taking place from time to time, all political parties are facing off in the elections after the last 8 years.
Candidates who entered the election fray without an alliance are busy meeting voters in villages ahead of the campaigning time set by the Election Commission.
In the 2074 local level elections, when the Congress and the then CPN (Maoist Center) formed an alliance, the ‘left alliance’ began in Lamjung.
In the subsequent elections to the House of Representatives and the Provincial Assembly, the UML-Maoist Center contested the elections across the country together.
In the 2079 local level, the House of Representatives and the Provincial Assembly, there was a 5-party alliance including the Congress-Maoist Center, but this time all the political parties are competing separately.
In the 2048 election, when Prithvi Subba Gurung contested from Lamjung Constituency No. 2 with the slogan ‘One Left-One Right’, the UML had fielded Keshav Lal Shrestha’s candidate and supported Dev Prasad Gurung from Constituency No. 1 from the then Janamorcha. It was an alliance. According to UML Gandaki Province Secretary Dhananjay Dawadi, political parties had their own candidates in the 2049 local body elections. UML and RPP were in an alliance in the 2054 local body elections. When the VDC elections were over and the District Development Committee elections came, the Congress and RPP formed an alliance.
When UML's Jamindraman Ghale was elected to the District Development Committee, Sthirababu Ghimire, who had rebelled from the Congress, became the vice-chairman. Gam Prasad Gurung, who had rebelled from the Congress, became a member. The same Gam Prasad is now a candidate for the House of Representatives from the Congress.
In the 2056 House of Representatives elections, all political parties contested the elections alone. In the first Constituent Assembly elections in 2064 after the peace process, all political parties also had their own candidates.
In Lamjung, where coordination is taking place from time to time, all political parties are facing each other in the elections after the last 8 years.
Haribabu Thapa, head of Marsyangdi Multiple Campus in Besisahar, says that it is better for political parties to compete alone in the elections. ‘When contesting elections together, what is the idea of which party, what is the manifesto of which party?’ He said, ‘When contesting elections together and sharing power between those who have come together, the voice of the people does not speak.’
In the 2079 House of Representatives elections, the then General Secretary of the Maoist Center, Dev Prasad Gurung, was defeated by the then Deputy General Secretary (currently Vice President) Prithvi Subba Gurung, the UML candidate. The candidates of the then ruling coalition, Takraj Gurung of the Congress and Bhesh Bahadur Poudel, were elected from Lamjung Province (1) and (2), respectively.
In 2074, when the Maoist Center and the UML joined hands, the same Dev Prasad Gurung defeated Dil Bahadur Gharti of the Congress. At that time, Dhananjay Dawadi of the UML from Lamjung (1) and Prithvi Subba Gurung from Lamjung (2) were elected as members of the Provincial Assembly respectively. Prithvi Subba also became the Chief Minister of Gandaki Province. He became a member of the House of Representatives last time by defeating the Congress-Maoist alliance and is still a candidate for the House of Representatives. Dev Prasad is not in the fray this time.
Workers who were not able to vote on their party's own election symbol in the previous two elections will not be able to vote on their own party's election symbol this time. Krishna KC, central member of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, says that the beautiful part of democracy is being able to vote wherever they want.
In this election in Lamjung, UML Vice President Prithvi Subba Gurung, Gam Prasad Gurung from the Congress, Harijang Tamang from the Nepali Communist Party (NCP), Dharmaraj KC from the National Independent Party (NRP), and Kevindra Jung Gurung from the National Democracy Party (RPP) are in the fray.
Similarly, Gujeshwari Prajapati Magaju from the Nepal Workers and Peasants Party (NMP), Rabindra Nakhola from the CPN-Maoist, Kosh Lal Gurung from the Shram Sanskriti Party, Bikash Gurung from the Mongol National Organization, Milan Baskota from the Janadesh Party Nepal, Bharat Gurung from the National Republic Party, and independent candidate Santosh Ghimire are in the fray.
