The Nepali Communist Party (NCP) has nominated 36-year-old youth leader Harijang Tamang for the House of Representatives seat in Lamjung.
A native of Sandhu Mronche of Besisahar Municipality-10, he was a member of the provincial committee of the CPN-Maoist Center before the party unification.
Party coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal and co-coordinator Madhav Kumar Nepal confirmed his candidacy ticket on Sunday. In Lamjung, where the then general secretary of the Maoist Center, Dev Prasad Gurung, was rumored to be the candidate, Tamang was finally given the ticket.
The CPN-Lamjung had directly recommended the names of 12 more people, including Gurung, putting forward the name of Dev Prasad Gurung. Gurung, who became a candidate for the House of Representatives in 2079 when the then Congress-Maoist Center was in power, was defeated by UML candidate Prithvi Subba Gurung. Sources said that Dev Prasad Gurung did not want to be a candidate in Lamjung for fear of being defeated if the party contested the elections alone. Gurung was elected as a member of the House of Representatives from Lamjung in 2074 from the UML-Maoist Center alliance.
Harijang Tamang was defeated in the local level election 2079 for the post of Deputy Mayor of Besisahar Municipality. Gurung won the post of UML candidate with 8,714 votes, while Tamang, the candidate of the then Maoist Center, Tamang, of the then Maoist Center, got 4,699 votes. Independent candidate Jeevan Kumar Shrestha of the Congress, got 1,615 votes.
Born on Bhadra 28, 2047, Tamang is an MPhil-PhD scholar in political science. He also has a bachelor's degree in law. The youngest son of father Lalchandra Tamang and mother Jogmaya Tamang, he became the chairman of the village's Buddhi Bikash Primary School Management Committee at the age of 22. He was the chairman of the management committee of the provincial hospital, Lamjung until a few months ago (2079 to 2082).
In 2075, Nepal Tamang became the Gandaki Province President of Ghedung, and in 2076, he became the chairman of the Nepal Indigenous Nationalities Federation District Coordination Committee. He was also the treasurer of the District Sports Development Committee from 2068 to 2071.
