Polden again nominated as UML candidate in Manang

What you should know

Polden Chhopang Gurung, who is in the Himalayan district of Manang, immediately thinks of the apple orchards of Bhratang. He sold a luxurious tourist hotel in Thamel, Kathmandu, and returned to Manang a decade ago to grow apples in his own village.

More interested in development than politics, he has been nominated by the CPN (UML) from Manang for the upcoming election of the House of Representatives on Falgun 21. He is currently the party's Manang chairman.

This is the third time that the UML has nominated him as a candidate for the House of Representatives from Manang. In the 2074 election, he defeated Tek Bahadur Gurung of the Nepali Congress and made it to Singha Durbar. As soon as he became active in politics, he handed over the responsibility of the apple to his sons Samraj and Yubaraj.

Polden Chhopang, who trailed Tek Bahadur by 279 votes at that time, fell behind Tek Bahadur by 328 votes in the 2079 election. In 2074, Polden Chhopang won with 2,300 votes. His rival Tek Bahadur got 2,210 votes. In 2079, Tek Bahadur got 2,575 votes. Polden Chhopang Gurung was stopped at 2,247 votes.

Polden Chhopang, a resident of Ngisyang Rural Municipality-8, Tanki Manang, has built a farm in Bhratang, Ward No. 1, and cultivated Barnashankar (hybrid) apples. He has cultivated apples on a total of 735 ropanis of land and has also built tourist infrastructure.

Palden Gurung of the Nepali Congress has a record of winning unopposed in the 2056 general election in Manang. Dev Prasad Gurung of the then Maoist party won the first Constituent Assembly election in 2064. In the 2048, 2051 and 2056 elections, the UML did not even field a candidate in Manang.

After studying class 8 at Prajendra Memorial School in Kathmandu, Polden went to Darjeeling and started ISC at Tri-Chandra Campus after passing his SLC. After leaving his studies, he went into the tourism and hotel business. He had advanced professionally and had joined the UML only a decade ago. His brother, former pilot Tripal P Gurung, is believed to have contributed to his entry into the UML.
