Samjhana Devkota of Gorkha has filed her candidacy for the National Assembly seat from Gandaki Province under the Congress-UML alliance. Devkota, a UML leader, had previously been defeated as a candidate for mayor, deputy mayor and National Assembly.

UML has given Devkota a chance to win from Gorkha, which is considered weak in terms of popular support among the 11 districts of Gandaki Province, with the facility to do so.

Devkota of Gorkha Municipality-3 Nareshwor joined the Nepal Communist Party in 2045 and joined the Nepal National Free Trade Union Congress in 2047. Devkota, who was active in the Gorkha Campus unit of the Nepal National Free Trade Union Congress, became the village committee of the then Nareshwor VDC, the area committee of Area No. 2, the regional coordinator, and the regional committee member.

Devkota, who became the regional committee secretary of UML in 2063, was elected as the secretary of UML Gorkha in 2066 BS. At that time, Devkota was one of two female secretaries in UML across the country. In 2068, she became a member of the party's National Representative Council and Zonal Committee member, and became a central member of UML from the 10th general convention in 2078 BS.

Devkota has worked as the secretary of the Central Organization Department since Asad 2079.

Devkota was defeated in the 2074 local level elections as a deputy mayor candidate from Gorkha Municipality on behalf of the UML. In the 2079 elections, the UML made Devkota a candidate for mayor and in 2080, it made her a candidate for a member of the National Assembly. Devkota was defeated in all three elections. In this time's National Assembly elections, provincial MPs and local level chiefs and deputy chiefs are voters. But Devkota's party UML does not have representation in 11 local level chiefs, deputy chiefs and provinces in Gorkha.

Her victory is almost certain due to the alliance with the Congress. 'I am a responsible party worker, I fought despite knowing that I would be defeated even if the party nominated a candidate in the previous elections,' Devkota told Kantipur, 'Now there is an alliance, I am happy to be given this opportunity.'
