The Temperate Horticulture Development Center in Marfa, Gharpajhong Rural Municipality-2, has started producing seedlings of the 'Hybrid M Nine Root Stock' variety based on high-density technology from the current year.
The hybrid apple seeds propagated through the tissue culture laboratory technology at the center have been sown and hybrid apple seedlings based on high-density technology have been planted here. So far, hybrid apple rootstock apple seedlings based on high-density technology have not been produced in Nepal through tissue culture technology. The center here has started emphasizing on seedling production for testing the production of hybrid apple rootstock seedlings.
Although attempts have been made in other tissue culture laboratories in Nepal to produce this type of hybrid apple rootstock seedlings, they have not been able to be propagated and developed compared to the center here, informed Ashok Limbu, the center's biological technology technical officer.
Tissue culture laboratory technology was established in 2078 BS at the center located in Gharpajhong-2 Marfa. He said that for the first three years of its establishment, it has been working continuously towards the propagation of hybrid apple technology through the tissue culture laboratory here.
Officer Limbu said that the process has been taken forward to produce about 6,000 hybrid M Nine root stock apple seedlings. The center has already produced 300 seedlings from the tissue propagation technology laboratory in 2080/81. He said that the center is preparing to make it available to the purchasing farmers after conducting a detailed study within the current fiscal year.
'If the center has sufficient glasshouses, there is a possibility that 50,000 to 60,000 hybrid apple root stock seedlings can be produced from the tissue propagation technology laboratory in a short time,' he said.
In the second phase of this year, seeds have been produced and planted here from Jestha by adopting various protocols for plant production. The center, which started its production for the first time as a trial in Mustang, is preparing to start the trial by taking it to high altitude, medium altitude and low altitude places here. The center has already root-stocked apples of the Gala, Fuji, Delicious and Golden Delicious varieties on the M Nine root stock plants produced earlier. Official Limbu said that the tests are yet to be conducted.
Apple cultivation has been carried out on an area of 837 hectares in Mustang. Out of which, apples planted on an area of 572 hectares have yielded.
