Crowds gather at election office to register names in voter rolls

Voter lists are currently being compiled for the upcoming elections to be held on February 21. New youth who have reached voting age and those who have not yet reached the age to register with a photo are now rushing to the District Election Office to register their names.

The Election Office has stated that with one person verifying, one person viewing the online form and one person taking photos, only a hundred names are registered in a day.

Currently, there is a long queue of service recipients in front of the District Election Office. Although documents can be submitted online, many voters are facing problems as they do not come to fill out the online form.

More than 2,000 new voters have been added in East Nawalparasi as of Kartik 27. According to Baburam Acharya, Information Officer of the District Election Office East Nawalparasi, more than 100 people are registering their names daily. ‘In the initial phase, the pressure of service recipients was low, but now the pressure of work has increased in the last few hours,’ he said, ‘Most of the voters are in the young age group. Now it will be easier as they can register their names online from home based on the national identity card.’

There is a shortage of manpower as both the preparation for the election and the compilation of the voter list have to be done at the same time. The office has stated that photographs of more than 800 people who filled out the form online and other technical work are still pending.
