The Gandaki Provincial Government is preparing to cut the budget of approximately two and a half billion rupees allocated for the current fiscal year to reconstruct physical infrastructure damaged during the Gen-G movement.

The cabinet meeting held on 11 Kartik had decided to partially and completely cut the budget allocated for current headings including tourism leave, vehicle purchase, and visits.

Accordingly, software purchase expenses will be cut by 80 percent, monitoring-evaluation, travel and newspaper expenses by 50-50 percent, food and miscellaneous expenses by 25-25 percent, and fuel and vehicle maintenance expenses by 20-20 percent, said Economic Affairs Minister Dr. Takraj Gurung.

The government plans to cut the budget for public property maintenance in ministries that were not damaged by the Gen-G movement by 50-50 percent. There was no material damage to the Ministry of Physical, Health, and Agriculture of Gandaki during the Gen-G movement. Gurung said that no new vehicles will be purchased for others except for those who were damaged by fire.

Gurung said that ministries other than health will not purchase any new machinery and equipment, and ministries and offices other than those that were damaged will not purchase furniture. The government estimates that by cutting current expenditure in this way, two billion rupees will be saved.

‘The provincial government has suffered a loss of about two billion during the movement. It is estimated that the same amount will be saved by cutting current expenditure,’ said Minister Gurung, ‘The positive side is that we will not cut any budget related to development that connects with the people.’

The provincial government had decided to restructure the administration in August by abolishing 9 offices, merging 32 offices to 17, and cutting 185 posts. He said that the government plans to save 2.5 billion rupees from this and spend it on reconstruction.

The provincial government had allocated 31.98 billion rupees for the current fiscal year. Out of this, 12.63 billion rupees have been allocated for current expenditure and 19.93 billion rupees for capital expenditure.

Of the total budget of the Gandaki provincial government for the current fiscal year 2082/83, 8.31 percent has been spent in the first quarter. According to the data of the Provincial Accounts Controller's Office, Gandaki, out of the total allocated Rs 31.98 billion, Rs 2.65 billion 61 million have been spent till Asoj.

9.55 percent of the total budget was spent in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2081/82. Office Chief Suresh Subedi informed that Rs 1.12 billion 73 million were spent on current expenditure and Rs 1.52 billion 88 million on capital expenditure till mid-Asoj. The government had allocated Rs 12.63 billion 66 million for current expenditure and Rs 19.93 billion for capital expenditure.
