What you should know

A prisoner who escaped from Kaski Prison during the Gen-G movement has committed suicide. Dev Bahadur Bishwakarma, 55, who was convicted of murder and was in Kaski Prison, was found dead at his home in Baraldanda, Pokhara Metropolitan City-26, on Monday morning.

He was found dead in a noose with a plastic rope, said DSP Hari Bahadur Basnet, Information Officer of the District Police Office, Kaski.

He was arrested on charges of murder about 4 years ago during the coronavirus pandemic. He had murdered a woman in a cohabitation (living together without marriage) relationship.

Ramesh Baral, a neighbor of the house where Dev Bahadur was found dead on Monday morning, said that he had murdered the woman about 4 years ago. ‘He hanged himself in the same house,’ he said. ‘I had heard that Dev Bahadur had come, but we had not met. Knowing that the police were looking for him, he would sometimes hide in the forest, sometimes somewhere else.’

His elderly father and three brothers also live near the house where he committed suicide. They were the ones who had sought help after seeing Dev Bahadur commit suicide. "I don't know exactly when the incident happened," he added, "My brother's house is attached, they saw it."

He used to work as a farm laborer in the village before being jailed for murder. He has a wife and four sons. His wife and youngest son lived separately in the market. After learning that Dev Bahadur had committed suicide, they went home on Monday morning. His body has been kept at the Western Regional Hospital for postmortem.
