The process of terminating the contract of Lohani & Brothers, which is responsible for the road connecting Barpak, the epicenter of the 2015 Baisakh earthquake, has begun. After the road remained uncompleted despite eight extensions, the Gorkha Road Project has requested the contractor company through a public notice to submit a reasoned reason within 15 days to avoid terminating the contract.
The 46.6-kilometer road from Barhakilo to Barpak was divided into four sections. The 8-kilometer road from Arkul to Dhodeni under the Barpak road, which was contracted to be blacktopped by Asad 2075, has been left idle by Lohani & Brothers Pvt. Ltd. for 10 years.
When the contract for that section was signed on Asad 11, 2072, it was mentioned that the work should be completed by Asad 15, 2074. However, the office has initiated the process of terminating the contract after the work was not done despite eight extensions, said Kalyan Khadka, an engineer at the office.
The deadline for the company has been extended to Paush 30. But the office has stated that the company has not done any work for almost a year and a half. ‘There was no work in the previous fiscal year, and the contractor company has not started work this year either,’ he said, ‘We have started the process of terminating the contract after not doing any work. Today, we have issued a notice to submit a clarification. Now, we will discuss with the department and proceed with the process of terminating the contract.’
He said that 80 percent of the work on the section has been completed. The office has stated that the blacktop, which was done a few years ago, has also rotted away, so the work to repair it is still pending.
The section has been neglected for years due to the negligence of the construction business. ‘The work on the blacktop, repairs, etc. is still pending,’ he said, ‘The work on other sections under the contract has been completed, but the problem arose due to the lack of work on this section.’
The work on the last section from Baluwa to Barpak under the Barpak road section has been completed. The 12-kilometer section of the road leading to Barpak from Masanethanti to Nivel Khare falls under the Mid-Hill Highway. The section has been blacktopped. 5 kilometers of the initial section and 5 kilometers of the section from 17 to 22 kilometers have also been blacktopped.
