Yam Ghale, who lives in Andover, UK, came to the village with his wife Maya. He is from Dordi Rural Municipality-6, Karti and has a house in Nauthar Shera, the rural municipality center. He celebrated Dashain there.
One day, he decided to go for a hike in the mountains. He heard that a pond had been built on Damrang Mountain. He had also seen the photos on social media. To see it with his own eyes, he took his wife from Nauthar Shera via Shikhar, Kukhredhunga, Kupling, Kabaki, and Bansbot to Damrang.
He reached a nearby restaurant via a dirt road, parked his jeep, and headed towards the pond. He was amazed when he saw the pond. “What a big pond in the place where buffaloes used to play,” he expressed surprise. He said, “We had made buffaloes play in this place, and now a pond has been built.” He used to go to his in-laws’ Pachok through this place.
Kusum Adhikari, who came from America and is from Nauthar Shera, saw a pond in the middle of the forest. When he saw fish playing in the pond, he asked the rural municipality chairman Yubaraj Adhikari, “You made a pond, how did the fish come here?” Chairman Adhikari said, ‘We released about 3,200 fish fry 2 years ago. This pond was built by Dordi Rural Municipality 2 years ago at a cost of about 2.6 million rupees under the Prime Minister’s Self-Employment Program. The pond is 73 meters long and 65 meters wide, said the Rural Municipality Chairman Adhikari. ‘Earlier, there was a place where buffaloes played. Although stone walls were already built, everything was in ruins. In winter, the water used to dry up completely,’ he said, ‘Now the water has accumulated. We have managed to add water to prevent the water in the pond from drying up. According to him, garbage is not allowed to be thrown in the pond.
Steps (ladders) have been built in this pond so that wild animals can drink water. Earlier, when buffaloes used to play, the water would dry up in winter. Now, wild animals and birds drink water from the pond during winter. Kopila Gurung, who runs a restaurant on Damrang Hill, said that wild animals and birds can be seen drinking water when people are not around.
The rural municipality has built 4 huts around the pond. There is also a facility to stay in the huts or pitch a tent. The huts have toilets and shower rooms. In Gurung language, Damrang is known by the names ‘Tamra’, ‘Damra’, ‘Tamrang’ etc. In Gurung language, ‘Ra’ or ‘Hra’ means pond. Legend has it that a shepherd named Dame or Tame drowned in this pond and died, so its name was called Tamera or Damera and later corrupted to Damra or Tamra and became Damrang.
