A potato fair has started in Dharche Rural Municipality-2 Gumda to promote potato cultivation. The fair organized by the local Gumda Ekta Youth Club and jointly organized by the Thamra Dharche Youth Club was inaugurated by the Chairman of Dharche Rural Municipality Lakshman Gurung on Monday.
The fair will be conducted till 5th of August. Potato dishes and handicrafts are displayed in the fair. An open men's/women's volleyball tournament has also been organized on the occasion of the fair.
In the men's volleyball tournament, the first place winner will get 75,000, the second place 50,000 and the third place team will get 30,000 cash prizes, said Naveen Gurung, coordinator of the fair. 22 teams have been registered in the men's volleyball tournament. 20,000 for the first runner-up, 10,000 for the second runner-up and 7,000 for the third runner-up in the women's volleyball tournament. For women, 7 teams have participated. He also said that the
potato eating competition will be the main attraction of the fair. In the potato eating competition, the first prize is 5 potatoes, the second prize is 3 potatoes and the third prize is 1 potato. Folk dance and group dance competition will also be held on the occasion of
fair. Gumda village is famous for potato cultivation. Gurung said that those who come to the fair will also buy potatoes produced in Gumda. More than 300 locals of Gumda village have been cultivating potatoes. Along with Dharche Rural Municipality, Barpak Sulikot, Arughat, Chumanuvri, Sahid Lakhan Rural Municipality come to the fair.
Locals say that there are different flavors of Khumal white, Khumal red and local varieties of potato in Gumda. A decade ago, locals used to carry potatoes on their backs to the market for sale. Now, with the arrival of the motorway in the village, the sale of potatoes has also become easy.
