Religious and touristic Gupteshwar cave at risk of landslides

What you should know

The seven-storied Gupteshwar Cave in Kushma Municipality-4 is at risk of landslides. There is a cave in the hollow of two small hillocks.

When the Damdare river flows from the side during the dry season, it erodes the land across the river, and there is a high risk of cave landslides due to the presence of large stones in the river.

The Damdare river flowing in a narrow gorge two decades ago when the Durlung landslide occurred, the river deepened and widened across the river . At that time, the landslide brought a big stone to the middle of Damdare river. Shambhu Kumar Mishra, Senior Watershed Management Officer of Groundwater and Watershed Management Office, said that if this stone is not managed in time, there is a danger of river water flowing towards the cave.

"If the big stone sitting near the cave cannot be removed, there may be a problem in the cave", he said, "The flood that comes at a high speed in Barkha cannot flow in its own way, so it has to flow through the corner". At that time, the possibility of flooding in the cave is high.

He said that from his office, he has been doing bio-engineering work from making check dams for cave protection. He says, "We are working to increase the height of the dam as the check dam is filled with slag." We are planting bamboo, amriso, napier, bhujetro and other plants under bio-engineering.'

Since the cave is located in a gorge, small landslides keep falling from above. Last year, a landslide occurred near the Ram temple in the cave complex. Now the landslide has fallen from the same side.

Harinarayan Upadhyay, president of Gupteshwar Religious and Tourism Development Organization, said that the cave was not damaged due to a small landslide. He says that even if small works are done by the government level for cave protection, it is not enough.

said that the main fear of the cave is the flood flowing in Damdare river. During the construction of the highway leading to Durlung, landslides occur frequently. "If the outer part of the cave could be made a machinery wall next to the river, then the barkha valley could not damage the side corner", he said, "For the long-term security of the cave, the state should be able to allocate a large budget by making a DPR". Instead of preventing landslides with a small budget, he suggested that the federal or state government should spend a large amount of money to protect the cave.

After the landslide destroyed the cement bridge on the Damdare river on the footpath leading to the cave through the Gayatri temple, the journey had to be risky. But as the number of devotees will increase in July, the committee has built an iron staircase some time ago.

As it is the month of July, there is a special crowd of devotees in Gupteshwar Cave. More than five thousand devotees have come to the cave on three Mondays alone. 2 lakh 20 thousand rupees have been collected from them.

Located at a distance of 10 minutes from Kushma Bazaar, this cave is considered very important from a touristic and religious point of view. Prithvi Narayan Sharma, President of Gupteshwar Religious Tourism Promotion Organization, claims that Gupteshwar Cave is the longest and seven-story cave in the world. They say, 'If you measure the long cave of the world, you will know if you look at seven floors.'

There is a legend that Parvati fasted in this cave to get Lord Shiva as her husband. According to legend, after the marriage between Mahadev and Parvati, both of them lived secretly in this cave for some time, so this cave is also called 'Gupteshwar Mahadev Cave'.

Natural Gupteshwar Cave was seen 90 years ago by a local Ratna Bahadur Karki while going to graze cows/goats . The construction of a 78-feet-high Shiva Parvati idol, Sismahal and temple is underway on 15 ropani land to promote the importance of the cave and bring in significant tourists.
