On the occasion of the first National Millet Day, 2082, Pokhara Metropolitan Municipality honored four farmers.

An exhibition of millet crops and farmers were honored on Friday in the organization of the Economic Development Division under the Metropolitan Municipality.

Mayor Dhanraj Acharya honored the four farmers who have been involved in millet farming in Pokhara for a long time and who produced the most millet. Babita Gurung of Pokhara-16, who cultivated millet in an area of about 8 plants, Ambika Bhandari of Pokhara-28, who cultivated millet in an area of about 8 plants, Sachen Gurung of Pokhara-23, who cultivated millet in an area of 10 plants, and Karna Bahadur Thapa of Pokhara-21, who cultivated millet in an area of 12 plants, were honored with cash and certificates.

Pokhara Metropolitan Municipality is committed to the protection and development of Raithane crops and stressed on production. He expressed his concern that the Raithane crop is being neglected and has reached an endangered state.

The metropolitan city has recently become self-sufficient in milk, curd, eggs and some vegetables, he said.

Millet Day special program has been organized with the aim of protecting traditional crops, promoting millet-derived grains, increasing farmers' income, increasing farmers' attraction to millet farming, strengthening the local food system and providing support to food security, said the head of the division, Manhar Kadaria. According to him, in order to promote it and increase the attractiveness of farmers, the Metropolitan Corporation has been providing the minimum support price.
