The government has been encouraging mid-day meals in government schools. Although the amount given by the federal government is low, the local government has been allocating the budget for midday meals according to daily needs. However, the local level has started to monitor the lunch as the school is using junk food in the lunch.

In order to protect and promote the health of the students and local production, Fedikhola Rural Municipality of Syangja has made ``Millet'' compulsory in the midday meal. The municipality has decided that millet should be compulsory for mid-day meal two days a week. Ghanshyam Subedi, chairman of Fedikhola Rural Municipality, said that preparations are being made to celebrate the 'First National Millet Day' on July 16. He said that from the same day, dishes made from millet will be mandatory in schools under the municipality.

'This is a historic step of the municipality,' President Subedi said, 'With this decision, the school lunch will now include delicious and nutritious dishes such as millet balls, mahmah, tawa roti, puva, sellroti, chiura, halwa and soup. It is believed that while protecting endangered local crops, it will contribute significantly to the improvement of the nutritional status of students. This campaign is not limited to schools only, he said.

From schools to assembly-seminars, millet dishes will now be given priority by the municipality. President Subedi has said that the policy of making millet dishes mandatory in every public event organized by the rural municipality from the ward office, Chamena home. The rural municipality has put forward this policy focusing on the multifaceted benefits of millet, its contribution to food security, increasing the income of farmers, and strengthening the local economy.

Special program on millet day

To make this campaign more effective, the rural municipality is going to organize a special program on the occasion of 'Millet Day' on 16th July at Fedikhola-1 Ramkot. Chairman Subedi informed that awareness will be spread at the community level through millet planting, exhibition of various millet dishes and experimental programs on that day.

To spread awareness at the school level, the municipality has already included a lesson titled "Millet: multi-purpose food" in the local curriculum of class 6 "Hamro Fedikhola" since 2077.

This step of Fedikhola rural municipality is not only the promotion of millet but also a powerful message in the direction of local identity, healthy lifestyle and economic independence. The municipality expects that this will set an exemplary example for other local levels in the future.
