Baglung Municipality-13 is located next to Damkphant now Pahenlpur. Hundreds of sunflowers are blooming here now. After many fields became barren due to migration, sunflowers were planted here.

Due to the lack of irrigation, the lands of many villagers who stopped planting rice have been consolidated and planted with sunflowers. Former teacher Tikaram Sharma is cultivating sunflowers.

70-year-old Sharma of Baglung Municipality-13, who retired after teaching for almost 35 years, has been taking care of sunflowers for a year. The locals, shocked by the monkey terror and forced to keep it barren without irrigation facilities, provided land to Sharma. "During the rainy season, rice was planted even with rainwater from the sky, but it was miserable in the winter," said the local, "On the advice of my son who went abroad, I rented land and now I have started sunflower cultivation."

He said that he started cultivating sunflowers by renting 100 plants of land. He said that the land of the locals was integrated and cultivated. They have rented the land at a rate of 5,000 per square meter of paddy growing field. Sharma's son Kedar is currently employed abroad. Tikaram has been doing the daily production work.

Oil can be extracted from sunflower. This oil is also sold a lot in the market. He is excited because the market is good if he can produce. But so far, he does not know that the work of its processing has been done in the district and its surroundings. Therefore, he is not clear on when to start oil extraction. "We have tried for the first time, I work with advice from acquaintances," he said, "sons must have made a plan too."

He is aiming to increase production in the coming days. For that, they have set a goal to save this year's seeds and plant them on time. He said that even if there is a loss in one or two seasons, they will continue to produce because it was done according to his son's wishes. "This crop is also safe from monkeys, so far it has not been seen that monkeys have eaten it," Sharma said, "Technical knowledge is also being acquired to increase production according to the environment and season." Rajeshwar Silwal, head of the

Agricultural Knowledge Center, said that since it is a new crop in this area, they will study how to increase production, marketing and other services. Our efforts will be to address the excitement and support marketing. Silwal said that this can only be confirmed after bringing in experienced technicians from the district or province who have tried for

processing and marketing. So far, sunflowers have not been cultivated commercially in the district, even though they are planted sporadically for attraction.

Sharma also said that since he started the work by bringing sunflower seeds from Sarlahi, he will collaborate with businessmen from Terai for marketing and processing. He said that it would be even better if we get support from the local level or agricultural knowledge center.
