More programs to make Handikot a tourist destination

What you should know

To make Handikot of Jaimini municipality-10 a tourist destination, the municipality has started further promotion programs.

The Gandaki provincial government and municipality have already invested a lot in this mountain, which is 2,195 meters above sea level. A three-storey view tower has also been built here. The road to the island has been opened. Since it is possible to reach by vehicle, the number of tourists has increased.

"Earlier you had to go on foot, now you can reach by car," said Mr. Prasad Thapa, chairman of Ward No. 10, "Initiatives are being made to build a graded road." He said that some sections of the road going to Bareng via Kushmisera Namduk have been blacked out, so if the road about 5 km from Dandakhani is graded, more tourists can be taken.

Handikot is also connected from Bihadthala to Padmarg. One km footpath has been built by investing about 5 million from the three-four year budget. Apart from that, another 500 meters of stairs are left to be built. The view tower has been built here with the budget of the ward, city and province.

According to Prem Sapkota, Head of Planning Branch of Jaimini Municipality, since 2075/076, the infrastructure of Handikot started with a small investment, so far more than 20 million has been invested. The aim is to keep a flat, gherabar and some inscriptions here. It is mentioned in the city's plan to manage the lack of drinking water.

From Handikot, you can see Gulmi in the south, mountains in the east, Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountain ranges in the north. Nowadays, there are also crowds of people who enjoy climbing the ropes, eating forest food and enjoying the natural scenery. A fair is held here every Fagupurnima. There is a tradition of worshiping the Goddess in Handikot and sacrificing a sheep. The local Magar community also performs a total puja on the same day.

Local Lal Bahadur Pun said that since Bhuretakure is a state site, goddesses are worshiped here, sacrifices are made and old weapons are collected. Lately, there has been an increase in the number of tourists who see the mountains, reach the heights and enjoy the view of the sunrise.

It is also a historical and religious place. To the east of here is the famous temple of Thanthapmai. Harihar Sharma, deputy head of Jaimini Municipality, said that conservation efforts have been made as archaeological objects have been found here.

Bhuretakure has kept a collection of weapons and scales used by Rajarjouta. "Exploration and research are yet to be done, but we are confident that this is a historical fort," said Sharma, "The ruins of a cannon near Thanthapmai also confirm that this is an important area."

There is a plan of the city to extend the footpath from Bihadthala to Handikot to the lower section as well. Sapkota said that they are building footpaths in sections every year by keeping a budget. It is mentioned in the master plan that this footpath will be taken up to the Kaligandaki river. The concept of footpath has been introduced so that you can reach Handikot after a three-hour uphill climb after leaving the vehicle in the Kaligand corridor.

Locals said that if the footpath is built to reach Handikot through Begalbagar, Dhullu, Bihadthala in Zaidi, it will be the longest stairway in the district. Locals say that its length will be more than four km.

Although it is possible to reach by car from Rangkhani of Ward No. 10, it will be easy from Ward No. 6, 7 and 8 if a footpath is built. For the promotion of Handikot, a hotel has started to be built in Namduk Bazar of Ward No. 10. There are also small hotels in Bihadthala that serve lunch.
