The farmers of Khorpokhara of Bihadi rural municipality-5 in Parbat are currently busy in strawberry farming. 19 farmers here have collectively cultivated potatoes on 50 acres of land.
Farmers belonging to Shivjikhola farmers group are aiming to earn one lakh rupees per household by selling potatoes this year. It is time to harvest potatoes planted in November. This time they think that potatoes can be sold from the garden at 50 rupees per kg. Farmers who are cultivating individual potatoes have been motivated by Krishi Gyan Kendra Parbat to form groups. Khagendra Prasad Tiwari, secretary of
group, said that now with the production of potatoes, storage should be arranged. We planted potatoes at home to eat. Now the goal is to market it in groups,' Tiwari said, 'maybe the entire rural municipality can be made self-sufficient from potatoes.' She said that when potatoes are grown in groups, the investment will be less and the production will be better.
Shivjikhola Farmers Group used 'Segita' potato as a sample this time. In order to produce only seeds in the current year, the Krishi Gyan Kendra has planted 'Segita' potatoes in Bihadi-1 Creative Farmers Group, Ward No. 4 Self-sufficient Agricultural Group and Shivjikhola Farmers Group in Ward No. 5. According to the Knowledge Center, you can make 'Potato Chips' and 'French Fries' from this potato.
Gyan Kendra head Parasuram Adhikari said that in the current financial year alone, farmers have been subsidized with seeds and technology to grow potatoes on 1,300 hectares of land belonging to 61 farmer groups. Stating that the target is to be able to send 26,000 metric tons of potatoes to the market this year, he said, "We have given farmers 70 percent subsidy on seeds and 50 percent on technology." If we have to manage irrigation, we have provided 70 percent subsidy.'
The Center has spent 2 crores of rupees in Parbat alone to increase the potato production . The chief officer of Gyan Kendra said that businessmen from Butwal and Syangja are trying to buy the farmer's produce.
Agricultural technician Rishiram Bhusal said that even if production increases, there will be no problem in the market. He said, 'Farmers are getting a fair price.'
