For the first time in Nepal, the process for appointing a new chancellor has been started in Gandaki University, where there is a provision to appoint a chancellor from the academic field. The tenure of Prada Ganeshman Gurung, the current chancellor of Gandaki University, who was appointed independently as the first chancellor of Nepal, is ending on February 3.

Gandaki University has formed a three-member recommendation committee for the appointment of a new chancellor, with the chairman of the judicial council as the coordinator. Kalpana Lamsal, a member of the Public Service Commission, and Yamuna Ghale from the Judicial Council are among the members.

Article 23 of the Gandaki University Act 2076 provides for the appointment of the Chancellor. In sub-section 3 of the said section, there is a provision that a 3-member committee will be formed under the coordination of the chairman of the judicial council to recommend the appointment of the chancellor. In which there is a provision to be a member of the commission appointed by the state public service commission and a member of the judicial council appointed by the judicial council. Prada Kailashnath Pyakurel is currently the Chairman of the Judicial Council.

Gandaki University is the first university of the state established by the state government. The university has informed that the recommendation committee will make a procedure and call for applications within a few days. There is a provision in the Act that the first chancellor appointed by the government can be appointed for one more term.

A person who has obtained a bachelor's degree and has at least 10 years of experience in the field of academic, administrative or management and who has reached the age of 45 will be eligible for the post of Chancellor. The recommendation committee has to recommend the names of 3 people who are eligible to be appointed to the post of Chancellor. The Chief Minister will appoint one of the three persons recommended by the Judicial Council as Chancellor.

When the government appointed the first chancellor, the judicial council was not constituted . To recommend the appointment of the chancellor, there was a 3-member committee consisting of the vice-chairman and the chief secretary of the provincial policy and planning commission under the coordination of the minister of education of the provincial government . The current Chancellor Prada Ganeshman Gurung was appointed on the recommendation of the same committee.

For the first time in Nepal, Gandaki University, which taught sports management at the undergraduate level, is now operating from the building of the Aviation Department at Mustang Chowk. The permanent or temporary structure of Gandaki University has been constructed by taking 526 ropani of land for use in Pokhara metropolis-32 Gyan Kunj. The pre-fab building has been constructed while the main administrative building is under construction.

Currently, this university offers Bachelor of Sports Management (BSM) along with Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT), Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm), Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Bachelor of Arts Bachelor of Law (BLLB) and Master of Information Technology – Studying Artificial Intelligence (MIT AI).

MIT was launched this year. At present, teaching has been done at Dam Side, Mahendra Bridge and Lekhnath. Registrar Kailash Timilsina said that preparations are being made so that all subjects will be studied from one place after some time.

Chancellor Prada Ganeshman Gurung says that the 10-year strategic plan has been set and the expected objectives have been achieved. Chancellor Gurung said that preparations are being made to teach MBBS and BDS in Gandaki University, which has created 13 courses. According to him, the curriculum has been prepared for them.

Gandaki University has held four international academic conferences in a period of 5 years and has prioritized the field of research and innovation along with teaching .
