A fire has broken out in the protected national forest at the south-eastern foothills of the Nilgiri South Himalaya under the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP). According to the police station located in Mustang, a fire has been raging in the Myagdi-Mustang border forest at the foot of the Nilgiri South Himal for a week.
Tej Bahadur Gurung, chairman of ACAP Annapurna Rural Municipality Conservation Area Management Committee, said that the wild animals are moving from Mustang to Myagdi. The storm that has been raging in Mustang for the past few days has increased the fire even more. The burnt area is far away from the settlement. A fire broke out in the summer in the Himalayan pasture area, which should be covered by thick snow. Locals estimate that the fire has increased due to drought due to lack of snow and rain.
There is continuous fire in the grass of the Beni-Jomsom road section and in the forest at the foothills of the Kaligandaki river. As it was covered with thick smoke like clouds, the flame of the fire was not seen from below,' said Asai Vinay Regmi of the Ghassa police station in Mustang. The fire can be extinguished only by reaching the hole. It is not possible to control it with our ability.
According to the records of the Division Forest Office, 36.76 percent of Myagdi's 229,706 hectares area is covered by forests, 1.85 percent by bushes, and 21.27 percent by grazing land. Dhorpatan Sikar Reserve covers 1,260 hectares, ACAP covers 3,753 hectares of forest area. Of the 79,439 hectares managed by the Forest Office, 24,202 hectares are being managed through 310 community forest user groups. There are about 5 hectares of confessional, religious and private forest. All the rest are national forests.
