Minister for Information and Communications Bikram Timilsina has said that the government is committed to implementing the changes expected by the Nepali film sector in a practical manner.
At a program organized by the Nepal Tourism Board and the Film Development Board here on Wednesday in honor of the Nepali film 'Elephants in the Fog', which won an award at the Cannes Film Festival, he clarified that the government is ready to take necessary initiatives for the development, strengthening and institutional reform of the film sector.
He said that the contribution of the film sector is invaluable and the success achieved in Cannes is a matter of pride for the country. 'The honor or award received here today cannot be measured by money alone.' It is felt that this film group has given a priceless gift to the country and the government,' he said.
Minister for Communications Timilsina said that for the long-term development of the film sector, the active participation of film workers is necessary to make the relevant bill under discussion in the parliamentary committee of the parliament timely and practical. He said that the suggestions will be incorporated into the bill after joint discussions with artists, producers and stakeholders.
'I will make every effort on behalf of the government to decide what kind of act the bill should be taken forward to uplift this sector that is connected to people's lives and investments,' he said, 'We can move forward by coordinating and communicating with the committee.'
He mentioned that although there is a lot of debate on spending for the development and prosperity of various sectors, there is relatively little discussion on how to create investment, how to produce and how to increase income. He was of the opinion that the film sector needs to be promoted as it makes an important contribution to the country, society and economy.
Informing that the government has allocated about 35 million rupees in the current fiscal year to encourage the production of quality films that speak to the identity, culture and voice of the country, Minister Timilsina said that initiatives will be taken to increase the budget further next year based on its positive results.
He pointed out the need to make the Film Development Board more capable and strong to develop the film sector as an industry and urged all parties to join hands for the upliftment of the film sector.
