Actor Ranveer Singh has been relieved by the Karnataka High Court from the controversy that arose after he called a goddess shown in the film Kantara a 'ghost'. In the hearing held on Tuesday, Ranveer's apology was accepted.
However, the court has also imposed a condition. The court has directed Ranveer to visit the Chamundeshwari temple within four weeks and apologize.
On April 25, Ranveer Singh had given an apology in an affidavit. The petitioner, however, argued that the affidavit could not be accepted as a valid apology, so the court had sought time to consider it.
According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, the court has decided to accept Ranveer's apology orally and dismiss the case. However, for that, Ranveer has also been given a condition that he should visit the temple within a week and apologize.
After the controversy in December 2025, Ranveer had apologized on his official social media. He had said, 'My intention was to highlight Rishabh's brilliant performance in the film Kantara. As an actor, I know how much effort he put into the way he presented that particular scene and I respect him immensely for that. I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and faith of our country. If I have hurt anyone's sentiments with anything I have said, I sincerely apologize.'
What was the controversy?
Last year, Ranveer Singh was part of the IFFI (International Film Festival of India). On stage, actor Singh made fun of Chamunda Devi, who was shown in Kantara.
He had told the film's actor and director, Rishabh Shetty, 'I had seen Kantara in the theatre. It was a great performance. Especially when the female ghost comes into your body. That performance, that shot was outstanding.'
Also, another video of Ranveer from the film festival was made public. In which Ranveer is seen mimicking Chamundi Devi in front of Rishabh Shetty after going on stage. Rishabh can be seen in the video constantly gesturing not to do so.
After the video went public, there was a lot of criticism against Ranveer. After that, High Court lawyer Prashant Meth filed a complaint against Ranveer Singh at the High Ground Police Station in Bangalore. He wrote in the complaint, 'Ranveer Singh made fun of the revered Guliga Devi and presented the Devi in an insulting and humorous manner. Due to this, the religious sentiments of Hindus and especially people belonging to the Tulu community have been hurt.'
