He was declared dead by a hospital in Dwarka, New Delhi, after suffering a heart attack.
Indian Idol winner Prashant Tamang has passed away at the age of 42.
He was declared dead by the hospital after suffering a heart attack in a hospital in Dwarka, New Delhi.
'He was in Delhi. I got the news of his death this morning. I got this news from his family and close relatives,' filmmaker Rajesh Ghatani told Kantipur.
Another singer Pramod Kharel also mentioned the idol's death on social media. 'I came to know about his death after all our music friends living in Darjeeling told me about his death,' Pramod wrote.
Indian media reported that he died soon after returning to the capital after completing a program in Arunachal Pradesh.
He had not been suffering from any serious health problems or discomfort before his death. Born on January 4, 1983 in Darjeeling, West Bengal, Tamang achieved national fame from a humble background.
After losing his father at a young age, he joined the Kolkata Police as a constable to take care of his family and sang in the police band (orchestra).
His life took a new turn after he auditioned for Indian Idol Season 3 in 2007. He eventually won the competition and won the hearts of millions of viewers across India and abroad.
'Today, every Nepali goes to big stages and sings.' It was all because of Prashant that he got the courage to appear on a reality show,' Ghatani added.
After winning Indian Idol, his victory became a matter of pride for the Gorkha and Nepali-speaking communities, and many communities celebrated his victory. After Indian Idol, he released several albums.
Along with music, he started his acting career. The Nepali film 'Gorkha Paltan' in which he acted was very well liked by the audience. Recently, he also acted in the Indian web series 'Paatal Lok' Season-2 and also acted in Salman Khan's film 'Battle of Galwan'. 'Even when I met him recently, he was saying that Salman has done a good job in his film.' He has done a great job of connecting Nepalis scattered around the world through songs/music,' Ghatani said.
Actor Anup Bikram Shahi, who worked with him in 'Battle of Galwan', remembers Prashant as a skilled singer as well as a capable actor.
'I met him on the set of Battle of Galwan for 4/5 days. He was very friendly and had a good personality. I met him only 4/5 months ago, I can't believe this news,' said actor Shahi.
Tamang has a daughter and a wife. Tamang, who lives in a place called Janakpuri in Delhi, was initially informed about the heart attack by his mother-in-law.
Then she directly informed her Indian Idol partner Amit Paul about it. And only after Paul wrote about it on the social media Instagram, the news of Tamang's death came out.
According to Darjeeling singer Mahesh Sewa Geetang, it has not been decided whether his last rites will be performed in Darjeeling or Delhi.
