Following the death of Indian Idol Season 3 winner and popular singer Prashant Tamang, artists from Darjeeling have demanded that his funeral be held in Darjeeling.
Following this collective desire and request of the artists, it has been decided that the late Tamang's funeral will be held in Darjeeling, his birthplace.
'Prashant's mortal remains will arrive at Bagdogra Airport at 12 am tomorrow,' said Darjeeling musician Mahesh Sewa, 'From there, the body will be taken to Darjeeling.'
After being taken to Darjeeling, it will be kept at the Information and Culture Department under the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) for some time for final tributes, informed Anuj Thapa, Director of the Information and Culture Department.
GTA Chief Anit Thapa has also directed the concerned bodies to make necessary arrangements for Prashant Tamang's funeral in Darjeeling. It is said that he will be cremated with state honors. He also said that necessary arrangements are being made to provide an opportunity for the people of Darjeeling, artists and well-wishers to pay their respects.
Filmmaker Rajesh Ghatani welcomed the GTA's decision, saying that Prashant's contribution should not be taken for granted. 'Prashant is an inspiring personality who has taken Nepali talent to international reality shows. Through songs, music and acting, he has connected Nepalis all over the world,' he said, 'That is why Darjeeling cannot underestimate his contribution.'
Darjeeling musician Sewa also expressed satisfaction over the decision to hold Prashant's funeral in Darjeeling. 'Prashant was our pride. We are grateful to the artist who rose from the soil of Darjeeling and gave identity to Nepalis all over the world. It is a great thing to be able to bid him farewell in his homeland,' he said, 'All the artists are preparing to bid him farewell with respect.'
