Only the canvas of the film looks big, it doesn't look like the color is applied on it. But despite the lack of resources and means, imagining a story like 'Sacrifice' on a big canvas is the courage shown by director Sen.
What you should know
There is a strange power in the film. The director creates such a fantasy world inside the screen that the audience cannot believe it. It seems to be compatible with the real world or, even if it is far away from the reality, there are aspects in it, which keep the audience close to that world.
That's why it is not known that the story kept 2 hours in the hall . The audience identifies themselves with the characters of such stories, and when the hero on the screen tightens his fist, the audience is giving the strength . But, if the director is not able to create that world, what happens ? The audience cannot believe that world . As a result, the audience's attention is distracted from the story. And, the audience begins to tense up .
, this is the problem in 'Balidan' directed by Santosh Sen . Director Sen has once again tried to paint a picture of 'Sacrifice' on a very large canvas. However, only the canvas of the film looks big, it doesn't look like it has been painted. For example, a place called Bhillamgarh is imagined in the film . The story of a mother and son living in Bhillamgarh is included in the film. However, there is an attempt to cover many topics in the film. For example, here there is not only the relationship between mother and son, but there is politics, there is a fight for identity . There is exploitation of the people of Bhillamgarh, greed for power and mother earth. However, the beauty of this big canvas of 'sacrifice' has been lost without knowing how to weave all these subjects into the story.
The story and story telling of the film is not new. The beginning of the oppression of the enemy in the village, the raising of a son by a single mother, the same son later taking revenge on the enemy, is a story that has been told in films before. However, since this story cannot be weaved with the screenplay, the special meaning of the sacrifice that 'Balidan' tries to give is not communicated to the audience . The film A son born from a mother's womb has tried to touch the powerful story of the same mother who was wronged and the sacrifices she fought for the mother earth. However, the screenplay has not been able to combine other sub-plots with the main story .
films have predictable subplots. For example, a new 'Baba' appears in the village and starts exploiting the people of Bhillam Garh . Abhay's (Sameer Bhatt) father is killed by Baba's group while going against that exploitation. Abhay's mother, who raised her voice against injustice, is also saddened by this incident. So she raises her son without identity . But, as Abhay grows up, every now and then problems start arising in Bhillam Garh. Then Abhay starts to deal with those problems . However, predictable plot, exaggerated dialogues and 'loud' acting do not match the story and sub-plot in the film . For example, at the beginning of the film, Abhay's mother rescues a child from Satru. But, in the middle, that child suddenly disappears, no one cares about him . But, we can easily guess, that the said character will appear later in the film at an important moment . However, the said character has not been properly established in the film.
Since the beginning of the film, those in power have been sitting in very serious discussions for the people of Bhillam Garh. But till then, Bhillamgarh and its people are not shown in the scene, or let's say till then, we don't know which government they are going against and adopting strategy to save which people. If the scene had already established these themes, the audience would have believed in the matter . Again, towards the middle of the film, the topic of identity comes up . Abhay fights for citizenship, the continuity of that subject also breaks . When Abhay gets entangled in other problems, that subject disappears. In this way, the film tries to touch many serious issues, but because it cannot show its depth, it seems that 'sacrifice' is floating on the surface of the main topic. The film has also failed in establishing the
character . As such, there are many characters in this film . However, that character has not been properly established . As the character of Kameshwar Chaurasia is given place in the beginning, the character disappears towards the end of the story. Meanwhile, the story of the Kabila group is connected to the same film. However, it is believed that the group was forced to protect the main character in the forest. The group's story, their background is nowhere to be seen . This group appears in the film only to give shelter to the hero in the forest. In that case, the audience cannot trust the tribal group that director Sen is trying to create.
Exaggerated dialogue is another problem of the film . Every character in the film speaks exaggerated dialogues . In those dialogues, there is no colloquial language anywhere. On top of that, the 'loud' acting has filled the beautiful scenes of the film with exaggeration. Actress Richa Sharma, actor Sameer Bhatt to Arpan Sharma's acting film is 'Loud'. Kameshwar Chaurasia has balanced some scenes. Another interesting aspect of the film is the fake beard and hair of Saugat Malla, who plays the role of Rudra. Even when Malla tries to find balance in acting, his beard and hair continue to mess up till the end . Attempts are also made to make the audience cry by stretching the feelings of mother and son again and again.
However, despite the lack of resources and means, imagining a story like "Sacrifice" on a big canvas is the courage shown by director Sen. Trying to build this kind of world by creating a set on top of that is the great effort of the 'Balidan' group . However, this hard work of Sen and his group has been sacrificed due to not being able to build the same world.
