"Since film reviews are being influenced by celebrities and social media influencers, the need for independent and unbiased reviews has increased," said the second day of the ongoing Thaha Film Festival in Thaha Municipality. Critic Prasanna Mali said during an interview on the title.
Sreeju Saral and Prabhakar Gautam who were reviewing in text format were in conversation with him. During the discussion, they shared experiences about challenges and opportunities in their respective mediums.
reviewer Mali argues that the field of film reviews is being affected by the influential culture in the post-Covid period in Nepal and said, 'Since film reviews are being influenced by celebrities and social media influencers, the need for independent and fearless reviews has increased.'
In the discussion that touched on the importance, influence, need and opportunity of film review, the issue of cinema's influence on the choice of the food to be worn by the common people was discussed . Critic Gautam said, "Cinema has the power to shape the mentality of the entire society, so it is necessary to review the cinema". When reviewing a film, it is important for critics to pay attention not only to the things inside the screen, but also to the various aspects and dimensions of popular culture.'
Critic Saral on this topic gave another example by saying that if the film is the constitution, the review is the parliament, 'The film gives us a bird's eye . Just as a bird can see a broad view of the ground from above, we can see a similar view when watching a movie. We cannot distinguish where and how the impact of the mistakes and decisions we make in our daily life is falling. However, by looking at the characters like us in the film, we can self-examine and correct ourselves . As the film is important, there is also a need for film reviews.' Gautam, who is the coordinator of the long Sayam film screening and review discussion program at the
film critic society Nepal Fiction, said that the review culture in Nepal will be meaningful only if everyone who is scattered in various roles in the field of review can make a collective intervention. He argued that there should be a review not only of the film but also of critics and reviews.
In an informal style of asking and answering questions, three speakers and three facilitators appeared in the dialogue.
The film festival, which started on January 28, has ended on Tuesday. A total of 20 films including short films, feature films and documentaries were screened at the festival. On the first day of the festival, a question-and-answer program was held between colorist and filmmaker Sulakshan Bharti and artist Naveen Neupane on the topic of 'Diversity of Nepali Cinema'.
