International Labor Day was started in 1889 on this day (May 1). The International Federation of Socialist Groups and trade unions decided to celebrate May 1 as International Workers' Day.

It was decided to celebrate Labor Day to commemorate the victims of the 1886 Haymarket movement in the city of Chicago, USA.

Workers in the city of Chicago protested to demand eight hours of work, rest and recreation every day. Along with the movement, there was also a demand that the class interests of the workers, job security and services and facilities should be addressed by the state side.

Some workers lost their lives after the police suppressed the protest. But in the end the workers won. As a reminder of that, in 1889, a meeting of labor organizations and leaders gathered in Paris, the capital of France, decided to celebrate Labor Day worldwide.
