After the flood of Narayani river, the residents of West Nawalparasi Susta have decided to build embankments themselves. When the flood came in Narayani on Wednesday, water entered the Tharu tol and the river cut rapidly towards the settlement, so the locals gathered on the embankment themselves.
For the time being, all the villagers are doing their work by removing nets and stones.
Ravindra Jaiswal, the spokesperson of Susta Bachau Abhiyan, said that everyone is working to save the slums. Now we ourselves are trying to stop the cutting by placing nets, stones and ballast in sacks," Jaiswal said, "We hope that the Irrigation Division and the municipality will also help after starting the work. We ourselves are tight to protect our settlements.' Yesterday and today, the locals are joining in labor to build the embankment.
Surrounded by the Narayani River on three sides and the Indian territory on one side, this settlement is flooded every year.
In this settlement located in Susta Rural Municipality-5 of West Nawalparasi, there is a risk of water entering and flooding every year, but the locals have to take the risk because the state is not interested in the necessary embankment and river control.
