A new terminal building is being built at the busy Biratnagar airport in the east. It is said that the 60-year-old terminal building will be moved to a new terminal building within a year at most.  Recently, the Biratnagar airport has been busy to cope with the increasing number of domestic air passengers.

Passenger traffic increased by 5 percent from 2021 to 2024.  Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAN) predicts that the number of passengers will increase by 4 percent from 2025 to 2030 and 3 percent from 2030 to 2035. 

The authority is constructing a terminal building with state-of-the-art facilities at a cost of around 3.12 billion rupees. Along with the runway  The authority has plans to expand. Sanjiv Khadka, engineer of the authority, said that about 45 percent of the work has been completed in two years. According to him, the financial progress is only 37 percent. 

"It is planned that the construction will be completed and handed over by 2082," Engineer Khadka said, "That's why the work has been accelerated." Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Sudan Kiranti did it. The construction contract was awarded to KC, Danfe JV.  According to Engineer Khadka, the building is being constructed on an area of ​​16,590 square meters. According to the authority, the 1,500 meter long and 30 meter wide runway will be extended to 1,770 meters soon. "Upgrading the runway is sure to make the flight safer and more efficient," says Khadka.

An airport was built in Biratnagar in 1958. Earlier, the airport located in Jatuwa village near Jogbani in India was shifted to Biratnagar after some time. The new terminal building will have facilities like 17 ticket counters, 24 shops, four restaurants, conference rooms, three VIP rooms, children's garden, breastfeeding room. 

There are more than 20 daily flights from Biratnagar, one of the major airports in eastern Nepal. In the past, there were mountain destinations, Tumlingtar, Bhojpur, Rumjatar, Pokhara and even mountain flights. After upgrading the airport, the authority plans to re-operate the closed domestic flights and to fly to neighboring countries including India and Bangladesh.

Chief Minister Karki said that there is a possibility of direct flights to various cities, especially in the neighboring countries of India and Bangladesh.
