Jim Simons, the world-renowned mathematician, billionaire and philanthropist, has died at the age of 86. Simons, who became a billionaire through trading in the American stock market, has contributed significantly to making Nepal's rural health services sustainable and quality.

Simons, who published the latest studies in quantum field theory, string theory and condensed matter physics, was later on making more and more money in less time. In 1982, Professor Simons of MIT, a famous academic institution in the United States, founded Renaissance Technology, which invests by analyzing the data of the American stock market using supercomputers. That organization has earned billions by investing in the stock market.

Forbes magazine listed as the 55th richest person in the world Simons, a resident of New York, has invested a large part of his wealth in charity work. A large part of his donation has been spent on the study and research of mathematics.

According to the wishes of Jim's late son Nick Simons, the 'Nick Simons Institute' was established in his name to support the rural health sector of Nepal. Nick came to Nepal in 2002 and worked here for 9 months. Although he returned to his country, he wished to come back to Nepal in the future and help in the health sector here. In 2003, after drowning in Bali, Indonesia, Nick's parents decided to support Nepal's health sector as his last wish.

Nick Simons Institute 'NSI' has been doing things like producing suitable medical manpower MDGP, BSLT and enhancing the capacity of health institutions for rural health in Nepal. Apart from this, NSI is also assisting in the construction of housing for doctors and health workers, maintenance of old structures, construction of hi-tech operating rooms and delivery rooms in hospitals. Similarly, it is conducting training and providing scholarships for operation theater nurses, anesthesia, biomedical technicians who are essential for surgery in hospitals and health posts in rural areas.

NSI is also running a hospital cleaning program in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. NSI is also conducting various types of training for doctors, nurses and health workers in collaboration with the National Health Training Center. NSI first started its support journey in Nepal by building a new maternity ward in Patan Hospital.
