Although other countries opened up their snow peak climbing and hiking in the 17th century, mountain climbing was prohibited in Nepal until the middle of the 19th century. French climbers Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal made the first ascent of Annapurna in June 1950 during the reign of King Tribhuvan. This was the first successful ascent of the mountains within Nepal from within Nepal.

After Annapurna, on May 29, 1953, Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary climbed the Khumbu and first set foot on the world's highest peak, Mount Everest. With the climbing of Annapurna and Everest, Nepal became the talk of the world. Western tourists coming to India started to climb mountains in Nepal where there is no basic infrastructure including roads and hotels.

Nepal opened its doors to tourists in 1950. Kathmandu became the gateway to all parts of Nepal. At the same time, Russian citizen Boris Lisanevich connected Kathmandu with Kolkata, India by air through Himalayan Aviation. In Calcutta, Boris ran Club-300, an imitation of Britain's Club-400, established for a prestigious and elite clientele. where he was introduced to King Tribhuvan. 

In the early 1950s, the Rana and the royal family allowed Boris to establish a luxury hotel (Royal Hotel) in Bahadur Bhawan, where the Election Commission and Vice President's office are currently located in Kantipath. This is why Boris is still respected by Nepal's tourism industry as the person who laid the first foundation in the tourism sector. It was not possible with his single effort to entertain the big state banquets, coronations and guests organized by the palace at that time. Even though the number of high and middle class western tourists coming to Nepal to see the mountains is increasing, the royal family decided to operate a large international level hotel for foreign guests on the advice of Boris and others.

At that time, King Tribhuvan's son Himalaya Veervikram Shah, his relative Prabhakar Shamsher Rana and others owned Hotel Solti in the western village of Tahachal and Cantonment of Kathmandu in the year 2022. According to details submitted by Solti Hotel Limited to Nepal Stock Exchange Limited, this luxury hotel was inaugurated on 10th November 2023.

Solti, which started with 104 rooms, has completed a journey of 59 years. During this period, Solti has played the role of a "warm foreign home" for thousands of foreign guests. When Solti was established, at that time the bodies related to the tourism sector such as Tourism Department, Ministry of Tourism, Tourism Board had not been established. Since 2054, Pachtare hotels have been classified by the tourism department. But when Solti was established, a senior employee of the company said, 'Nepal Hotel Association was established after Solti.' There are VVIP suites, Meghamalhar with a capacity of 800 seats, Sursudha with a capacity of 125 seats, Sargam banquet and meeting hall with a capacity of 80 seats. Solti is currently expanding outside the country as well.

'Time has changed a lot since Solti was established and now,' Sudarshan Chapagarin, vice-president of Solti, said, 'Earlier, Nepalis had the mindset that Pachtare Hotel was only for weddings. But now in the banquet hall, it is seen that Nepali people dominate the banquet, not foreigners. Earlier, banquet booking was done only for weddings. Now, baby showers, pasni, wedding anniversaries, and birthday celebrations all come to the banquet hall of the five-star hotel.

Solti's annual total turnover is 60 percent of room income and the remaining 40 percent is from banquets, Vice-President Chapagain said. Solti, which mainly depends on foreign airlines and tourists, had to bear operational losses during the Covid period. At that time, the management said goodbye to the employees of many departments under it. "We said goodbye to about 250 employees during Covid," said Vice-President Chapagaiin. Chapagai, who is also a chartered accountant, said that the profit is increasing instead of making a loss. According to the annual report of 2079/080, Solti earned 2 billion 250 million from rooms, restaurants, banquets, other services, miscellaneous income that year. According to this data released on June 31, 2080, it was a 64 percent increase over the previous fiscal year 2078/079. Its net profit that year was 55.49 million. Solti's main investor is Solti Enterprises Pvt. Its share is around 49 percent. The company is owned by Prerna Rajyalakshmi Singh, daughter of Purvaraja Gyanendra. Apart from this, 12 percent is in the name of Nepal Airlines Corporation and 7 percent in the name of entrepreneur Ravibhakt Shrestha's NE Group. About 31 percent of the shares have been sold to the general public. Total shareholders in this company are 15 thousand 226. The value of Solti, which was established 60 years ago at around 40 million rupees, has reached 42.82 billion rupees according to the market value of NEPSE.

Chitwan

The hotel inaugurated by King Mahendra was run by Nepalese for three years. Then in 1969, its management was given to India's Overai Hotels Pvt Ltd. According to Vice-President Chapagain, Overai managed Solti for 25 years. Then in 1995, Solti handed over the management to the UK-headquartered InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG). Crowne Plaza under IHG has been looking after Solty's management. Due to the impact of the Covid epidemic, Solti has been promoting the Nepali brand Solti after breaking the collaboration with IHG 4 years ago (year 2020).

Prabhakar Rana, who was its founder and long-time chairman, has passed away at the age of 84 in May 076. On the occasion of the golden jubilee of the hotel, during a conversation with Kantipur in October 073, Rana said that Solti Hotel is the first hotel industry to be listed on shares and run by debt investment in hospitality. He recalled that at that time it was very challenging to take the decision to sell the shares of Solti to the public.

Solti Hotel was established in 1965 with loan assistance from the Industrial Development Center established with the support of the American government. Solti, operated by the royal family, is today the first public limited company under the hotel listed in the Nepal Stock Exchange Limited by registering its shares with the Nepal Securities Board.

 About 60 years ago, when the white-colored Solti Hotel was established in the middle of the then Kalimati, Tahachal and Canton villages, it was considered very attractive. During the hippie era, Cantonment, Sundhara, Basantpur were clearly visible from there. However, now Solti has to compete with 10 five-star hotels in Kathmandu alone. The number of five-star hotels in Nepal has now reached 16. Today, Solti has become synonymous with Nepal's hospitality. According to Chapagarin, Solti has become a "warm and safe home away from home" for high-level foreigners. "Solti is the first choice of foreign guests," said Chapagain, "if the room or banquet hall is fully booked, foreign guests will visit other five-star hotels."

Solti has now expanded outside Kathmandu. After the Indian pilgrims going to Mansarovar pass through Guljar in western Nepal, Solti has launched 'Solti West End Premier' there. After Nepalgunj, Solti has also expanded to Bharatpur, Janakpur, Itahari, Nagarkot and Thamel. Now we are preparing to open in Manakamana and Lumbini. The company has set a goal of delivering 15 hotels under Solti's ownership and strategic management in two years,' Chapagain said, 'Based on nearly 6 decades of experience, we are planning to go outside Nepal as well.' 

Solti is operating the Horizon Lounge at Tribhuvan International Airport to serve business class passengers of foreign airlines. It is the first and only company in Nepal to operate catering service for airline passengers, Gate Gourmet. It has liaison offices in cities including Delhi in India to accommodate guests.
