12,700 Nepalis are going to end their stay in the US after the US government decided to cancel the Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) decided to cancel TPS 2082 July 20 (2025 August 5) provided to Nepali by the American government on June 23 (2025 June 6).

After the decision of DHS, from July 20, 12,700 Nepalis will be legally recognized to work and stay in America. There are currently 14,500 Nepali TPS carriers in America. Among them, 12,700 have been mentioned in the National Immigration Forum's list of canceled TPS .

The American government provided TPS for the affected people especially after the 2072 Baisakh 12 earthquake. People who went to America as victims of conflict during the conflict and took TPS will also be affected by this decision of the American government .

According to the notification issued by DHS, the TPS period of 14 thousand 500 Nepalis was renewed on December 25, 2023 for 18 months, i.e. till June 24, 2025. However, after DHS decided to cancel TPS on August 5, 2025 on June 6, 2025 before the period ends, it is certain that 12,700 Nepalis will be allowed to stay and work in America.

Repeal of TPS: 12,700 Nepalis will have to leave America Before the expiration of TPS, 1 thousand 800 people have completed the legal process for the recognition of being allowed to live and work, so the situation of leaving America immediately has been avoided. According to the decision of the Trump administration, even before the termination of TPS, if the Nepalese completed any other legal process for residence or succeeded in obtaining a residence permit, the DHS said that they would not have to leave the US immediately .

DHS Secretary Christy Noem has stated that the US government has a practice of providing TPS for temporary residence to those who are at risk due to natural disasters, violence, and war in the poor countries of the world. She said, 'We have started the process of phased cancellation and expiry of the deadline . A date has been fixed to prepare legal basis for residence after TPS is no more. Therefore, legal permission must be obtained within the said period, otherwise it is mandatory to leave the US on the specified date .'

According to the information released by DHS, '2025 June 6, it has been decided to cancel TPS of Nepalese. The deadline will expire on June 24, and 12,700 Nepalese who have no other legal permission will have to leave the US by August 5, 2025.' As there are about three weeks left for the cancellation of TPS for Nepalis, the American government has not yet published any new notice to extend the deadline .

President Donald Trump in his first term, also in 2019, initiated the TPS repeal process . This time, out of the 16 countries that have received TPS, the stay of citizens of four countries, including Nepal, will end within the next two months.

According to the decision of the US Supreme Court on May 19, 2025, 472,000 out of 7,95,000 Venezuelans had their TPS revoked in the list of the National Immigration Forum. For the remaining 323 thousand citizens of Venezuela, TPS has been renewed until September 10, 2025.

Similarly, together with Nepali, it has been decided to cancel the TPS of 17 thousand 700 of Afghanistan on July 14, 2025 and 10 thousand of Cameroon on August 4. According to the list of Immigration Forum, the TPS period is still valid for the citizens of 12 countries.

76,000 from Honduras, 4,000 from Nicaragua, 4,74,000 from Haiti, 8,200 from Syria, 280 from South Sudan, 7,300 from Myanmar, 12,800 from Ethiopia, 4,000 from Yemen, 4,900 from Somalia, 2,332,000 from El Salvador, 3,950 from Sudan and 13,070 from Ukraine will immediately expire. Not finished .

Currently, 1.1 million citizens of 16 countries, including Nepal, are living in TPS across America. New York, Texas, New Jersey, California, Georgia, Florida, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, North Carolina, Indiana, and Washington state are the largest recipients of TPS. In 1990, the then President George W. Bush introduced the TPS system for the first time.
