Nepali mountaineer and mountain guide Chatur Tamang has set a new record in Nepal’s mountaineering sector by successfully summiting Mount Elbrus (5,642 meters), the highest mountain in Europe, 200 times.
He achieved this historic feat upon reaching the summit of Elbrus at 6:20 am local time in Russia on Saturday. Successfully climbing the same mountain 200 times is considered a rare achievement in global mountaineering.
On his journey to the 200th ascent, Tamang continuously led international climbing teams. He completed his 198th ascent on July 22 and his 199th on July 23, before accomplishing the much-anticipated 200th ascent on July 25.
On this special occasion, he hoisted Nepal’s national flag atop Elbrus. Since the beginning, Tamang has been promoting Nepal’s identity and the contribution of Nepali mountaineers in the global mountaineering arena by taking the Nepali flag to the summit on every successful climb.
Born in Solukhumbu, Tamang has been gathering mountaineering skills and experience, and has been pursuing mountaineering professionally since 1995.
He has been living in Russia since 2002. While residing there, he set the goal of climbing Mount Elbrus 200 times, which he has now successfully accomplished.
Currently, Tamang is actively involved in mountaineering activities in both Nepal and Russia. In Nepal, he guides Russian climbers on various mountains, while in Russia, he is responsible for leading international climbers on Elbrus expeditions.
In addition to Elbrus, Tamang has also successfully climbed other renowned peaks such as Everest, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga, Cho Oyu, Manaslu, Ama Dablam, Baruntse, Island Peak, and Mera Peak.
