Last year, tourists from 169 countries visited various destinations in the Annapurna Conservation Area. During that period, 584,476 foreign tourists entered the area. Of these, 384,145 were from South Asian countries and 124,331 were from other countries. The highest number of tourists, 375,797, came from India. The second largest number was 12,539 Chinese tourists and the third was 9,884 American tourists. Similarly, 9,859 tourists from the UK, 7,939 from France, 7,848 from Malaysia, 7,634 from Germany, 7,448 from Bangladesh, 7,955 from Australia and 6,398 from Israel entered the area.
Dr. Rabin Kadariya, head of the Annapurna Conservation Area Project, said that more than twice as many foreign tourists visited the region last fiscal year compared to 2081/82. According to him, 278,113 people visited the Annapurna region in 2081/82. He said that a new record was set in tourist arrivals last fiscal year.
Dr. Kadariya said that the number of tourists from South Asian countries, including India, increased by almost 300 percent in last Jestha. This is the first time that Indian tourists have come in such a large number. The number of Indian tourists has increased due to the promotion of destinations in this region, including Pokhara and Muktinath, ease of transportation, and publicity through social media.
Indian tourists come to Pokhara and nearby destinations to beat the heat during that season. Hotel occupancy in Pokhara, the tourist capital, reached 90 percent during the months of Baisakh-Jeshtha. Chief Dr. Kadaria said that about 40 percent of Indian tourists visiting Pokhara go to Muktinath. The Annapurna region is considered a world-famous destination for trekking tourism.
Tourists reach Annapurna Base Camp, Mardi Himal, Ghandruk, Tilicho Lake in Manang, Thorangla Bhanjyang, Upper Mustang, Muktinath area, and Ghodepani in Myagdi through the Annapurna Cycle Trail.
The Annapurna Conservation Area Project only keeps statistics on foreign tourists visiting these destinations. The Annapurna Conservation Area, spread over 7,600 square kilometers, is famous for its natural beauty, biodiversity, Himalayan life, culture, etc.
87 wards of 15 local levels of Kaski, Lamjung, Manang, Myagdi, and Mustang are included in the Annapurna Conservation Area. This area is considered excellent for trekking in terms of attractive destinations, tourism-friendly infrastructure, hospitality, and service facilities.
