Prime Minister Balendra Shah has said that the government is emphasizing on the development and promotion of quality ready-made garment industry (textile) based on domestically produced raw materials.
While discussing with the officials of the Nepal Ready-Made Garment Industry Association at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers on Tuesday, Prime Minister Shah expressed his commitment that the government is ready to provide all kinds of facilitation for the development and expansion of the ready-made garment industry.
During the discussion, Prime Minister Shah directed the concerned minister to immediately proceed with the work of forming a 'Textile and Clothing Development Council' to be located in the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies as demanded by the officials of the association. The officials expect that the formation of the council will facilitate the promotion of export and import of ready-made garments based on domestically available raw materials.
As demanded by the officials, Prime Minister Shah has further directed the Ministry of Industry to immediately operate the sick ready-made garment industries in the private sector. Similarly, he has directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to work immediately to bring in a free trade agreement (FTA) and foreign direct investment (FDI), and to clear the way for ready-made garments and other goods in the US as they are stopped and there is no 'testing certification'.
He has also expressed his commitment to produce the skilled manpower required to fulfill the objectives of 'farm to fiber', 'fiber to fabric', 'fabric to fashion' and 'fashion to export'. When the representative complained that the budget for the Green Garment Village was not available even though the provision was in the government's policy and program, Prime Minister Shah had urged him to immediately find land in a suitable place and assured him of providing the necessary budget.
Stating that it was necessary to take Nepal from an underdeveloped country to a developing country, Prime Minister Shah had emphasized that efforts should be made to solve all kinds of problems faced by the ready-made garment industry for that. He said that the ready-made garment industry should be able to produce raw materials and other materials required by the industry in Nepal.
The discussion was attended by the association's president Pashupati Dev Pandey, first vice-president Basanta Raj Adhikari, general secretary Bhim Kumar Giri, chief executive officer Suyash Khanal, technical advisor Prakash Kumar Jha, and others.
