So far, 73.61 percent of the sowing has been completed across the country. According to the data of the Department of Agriculture under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, 10 lakh 11 thousand 302 hectares have been sown as of 4th Shrawan.
The highest sowing has been done in Sudurpaschim. 90.67 percent of the sowing has been completed in this province. This is followed by 80.65 percent in Lumbini, 78.36 percent in Gandaki, 77.33 percent in Bagmati, 77.05 percent in Karnali, and 57.93 percent in Madhesh. In Koshi, 73.94 percent of the sowing has been completed, according to the department.
According to the department, sowing has been completed in 2 lakh 43 thousand 47 out of 2 lakh 76 thousand 386 hectares in Koshi, 2 lakh 21 thousand 546 out of 3 lakh 82 thousand 433 hectares in Madhesh, and 88 thousand 557 out of 1 lakh 14 thousand 524 hectares in Bagmati. In Gandaki, 73,349 out of 93,606 hectares have been sown, in Lumbini, 243,042 out of 313,072 hectares, in Karnali, 33,353 out of 43,290 hectares, and in Sudurpaschim, 147,106 out of 162,250 hectares.
72.14 percent of the sowing was completed by 4th of July last year. This year, the monsoon arrived 6 days later than the average compared to previous years. Although the monsoon usually arrives in Nepal on 13th June, it was estimated that sowing would not be possible on time as it arrived only on 19th June this year. However, the data shows that sowing is taking place this year as well compared to last year.
95.54 percent of the sowing was done by 7th of Bhadra last year. Rajendra Koirala, Deputy Director General of the Department of Agriculture, said that the sowing percentage has increased in Madhesh due to the rains that have occurred in the last one week. "Planting depends on the farmers' preparation and natural conditions. The area under planting has also increased due to the rains in the last one week," he said.
However, farmers complain that planting has not been done due to insufficient rain in some places. Kriti Bahadur Rana, a farmer from Bangad Kupinde Municipality in Salyan, said that the springs around the river have dried up due to the long-lasting drought and due to insufficient rain, they have not been able to plant on time.
Mahesh Acharya, head of the Agricultural Development Office in Salyan, said that 80 percent of the planting has been completed across the district despite the lack of timely rain. Dhan Bahadur Khatri, a farmer from Badhaiyatal-2 in Bardiya, said that planting has started through irrigation through pumps due to insufficient monsoon rains. He said that planting was done before 15 Asad last year, but this year it has been delayed.
Kamala Adhikari, head of the Bardiya Agriculture and Livestock Development Office, said that this year, 100 percent of the paddy will be planted in about a week. “90 percent of the planting has been completed in Bardiya,” she said, “100 percent planting can be completed within a week.”
