Department instructs not to sell bird flu infected birds
The Department of Animal Services has stated that action will be taken against the concerned businessmen if they sell and distribute bird flu infected chickens, ducks, quails and other birds.
Urging the public not to play with their health, Department Spokesperson Dr. Mukul Upadhyay informed that strict action will be taken as per the law if infected birds are found being sold in the market.
The department has instructed to take precautions as there is a risk that the bird flu virus, which has spread to 11 districts of the country since last Chaitra, may mutate.
Stating that a team of technicians is active in the infected areas of Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kavrepalanchok, Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Mahottari, Bara, Chitwan and Nawalparasi to control the spread of the disease, he informed that high alert has been adopted to prevent the disease from spreading elsewhere. As 'Rapid Response Team' has been mobilized in the concerned districts, some districts are in the process of being brought under control.
The department has urged people to take special precautions as there is a risk of spreading the disease to humans by randomly throwing away dead chickens and destroying infected birds. The department has stated that around 700,000 birds, 1.1 million eggs and 300,000 kg of feed have been destroyed in 11 districts where bird flu has been confirmed, including the Kathmandu Valley.
According to the department's spokesperson, Dr. Upadhyay, since the vaccine for bird flu has not been effectively developed, there is no alternative to destroying birds and bird products as soon as the infection is detected. It is stated that work is being done to collect details of the destroyed birds through the District Administration Offices of the affected areas to assess the destroyed birds, collect the bonds and provide compensation to the farmers of the concerned districts.
