The Ministry of Agriculture, Forest and Environment has issued guidelines for determining the minimum support price (MSP) and minimum procurement price of major food crops. The ministry has stated that the system of determining the support price has been implemented before the crop is planted.

According to the ministry, the work related to determining the MSP of major food crops has been completed under the government's 100-point governance reform program. For this, the 'Guidelines on Determining Minimum Support Price and Minimum Procurement Price, 2082' have been issued. The guidelines were approved by a ministerial decision on Baisakh 16 and registered with the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs and made public through the ministry's website, the ministry said.

Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Geeta Chaudhary said that since the minimum support price is determined before the crop is planted as per the guidelines, farmers can choose the crop based on their costs, potential income and market conditions. 'Once the price that the farmer will receive is already determined, he can decide on the basis of planting the crop or choosing other options,' she said.

The Ministry has stated that the minimum support price of wheat and Chaite paddy for 2082/83 has been approved by the Council of Ministers. Similarly, the minimum support price of rice for 2083/84 has been determined by the Council of Ministers meeting held on Jestha 11.

As per the decision of the Council of Ministers, the minimum support price of coarse rice has been fixed at Rs. 3,660 per quintal and that of medium rice at Rs. 3,860 per quintal.

The Ministry has also stated that the process of determining the minimum support price of rice for the upcoming fiscal year has been initiated. Stating that there was no provision to determine the support price of rice earlier, the Ministry is preparing to submit a proposal regarding the price determination to the Council of Ministers by the middle of Falgun.

In the case of sugarcane, the minimum purchase price for 2082/83 has been determined by the decision of the Council of Ministers on Mangsir 22, 2082. The ministry has stated that a proposal regarding the minimum purchase price of sugarcane for the upcoming fiscal year 2083/84 will be submitted to the Council of Ministers by mid-November.
