The government has started emergency operations to control the disease in the bird flu-affected areas and prevent its spread elsewhere. Director General of the Department of Animal Services Dr. Umesh Dahal informed that about 515,000 birds from 72 farms in 10 districts where the disease has been confirmed have been destroyed.
Layer chickens and local breed chickens have been affected the most.
The 'rapid action team' deployed as per the government's instructions has also destroyed 700,000 eggs and 183 tons of feed.
According to Dahal, after the bird flu was seen in Jhapa, Morang, and Sunsari districts about seven years ago, bird flu has spread to Mahottari, Bara, Chitwan, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, and recently Nawalparasi districts. 'There is no cure for it. The only solution is to control the disease as soon as it appears and prevent its spread. Therefore, there is no alternative to destroying poultry products. That is why veterinarians and animal health workers are working day and night to control the disease,' he said.
Recently, the Kathmandu Valley has been at risk of bird flu. Poudel informed that the disease has almost been brought under control in Chitwan and other parts of the country.
To prevent further infection, he also informed that there is a provision to resume business only after about two months of destroying all poultry products in the affected area.
