The import of electric vehicles from the country's main border point, Birgunj, has increased significantly till Chaitra of the current fiscal year. The import of all types of electric vehicles has almost doubled compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year.

According to the Birgunj Customs Office, 493 electric jeeps, cars and vans worth Rs 1.46 billion have been imported through this border point till Chaitra of the current fiscal year. From which a revenue of Rs 980 million has been collected.

During the same period of the previous fiscal year, 172 jeeps, cars and vans worth Rs 480 million were imported. From which a revenue of Rs 410 million was collected.

Similarly, till Chaitra of the current fiscal year, 7,398 electric motorcycles and scooters worth Rs 960 million have been imported. From which a revenue of Rs 320 million has been collected.

During the same period of the last fiscal year, 4,227 electric motorcycles and scooters worth Rs 550 million were imported. From which a revenue of Rs 140 million was collected.

The import of electric three-wheelers (tempos and rickshaws) through this checkpoint is also on the rise. Till Chaitra of the current fiscal year, 4,606 such vehicles worth Rs 530 million have been imported through this checkpoint. From which a revenue of Rs 180 million has been collected.

During the same period of the last fiscal year, 3,613 such vehicles worth Rs 450 million were imported. From which a revenue of Rs 140 million was collected.

In total, electric vehicles worth Rs 2.98 billion have been imported through this checkpoint till Chaitra of the current fiscal year. Such vehicles worth Rs 1.48 billion were imported during the same period of the last fiscal year.

Anup Agrawal, joint secretary of the Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry and operator of electric car company Dipal, says that the demand for electric vehicles has increased with the rising price of fuel and the growing attraction towards environmentally friendly technology. He says that the use of electric vehicles will increase further if infrastructure expansion, access to charging stations and long-term policy stability are ensured.
