As the income has started to increase rapidly, the number of people cultivating maize has increased in the district. Farmers here are cultivating two crops of maize. Earlier, most of them cultivated maize only in the rainy season. Recently, interest in winter and spring maize cultivation has increased.
It is now time to cultivate the winter maize planted in Kartik. Farmers who have grown mustard and potatoes have already planted spring maize. Maize cultivation is now seen everywhere in the district. Farmers who have already prepared maize are busy selling it, while farmers who have not yet ripened maize are busy taking care of it.
Sitaram Tharu of Gulariya-8, Thapawa said that he started cultivating maize last year after seeing the benefits of maize over wheat. ‘Maize is produced more than wheat and there is also profit in selling it,’ he said, ‘60 to 70 quintals of maize are produced in one bigha.’ He has cultivated maize in 12 kaththas. He said that the maize will be ready within two weeks. He claims that 30 to 35 quintals of maize will be produced in 12 kaththas.’
Sunita Tharu of Badhaiyatal-6 said that she is selling maize grown in 4 kaththas. She said that she is selling it for Rs 10 per ghogha. Chitrakumari KC of Madhuvan-7, who has been cultivating maize continuously for four to five years, said. ‘Maize is produced more than wheat,’ she said, ‘The attraction in maize farming has increased because of the higher production.’ She said that she has cultivated maize in 15 kaththas this year. ‘It is estimated that 35 quintals will be produced more,’ she said, ‘Maize farming is more difficult than wheat farming. There is always a problem with seeds and fertilizers during planting.’ She said that last year, maize was sold for Rs 3,000 per quintal.’
Mahadev Sah, head of the Gulariya Municipality Agriculture Branch, said that winter and spring maize were cultivated on 400 hectares in Gulariya Municipality this year. The Agriculture Branch is distributing hybrid maize seeds at a 75 percent subsidy. ‘This year, we have distributed seeds to 237 people,’ he said. ‘We are also providing free pesticides and technical advice to farmers in case of similar pests.’
Maniram Tharu, Deputy Technical Assistant at the Agriculture and Livestock Development Office, said that winter maize was cultivated on 110 hectares across the district in the fiscal year 2080/81. According to him, in 2081/82, 2,183 metric tons were produced when winter maize was cultivated on 468 hectares, while 21,256 metric tons were produced when spring maize was cultivated on 4,310 hectares.
